New defrost timer on fridge keeps tripping circuit breaker

I replaced a broken defrost timer on a GE fridge (around 23 years old...model number TBXK18KJB freezer on top). Now, every time it kicks into defrost mode, it trips the circuit breaker.

Hi, it sounds to me, either you have a bad circuit breaker (the breaker itself); or you have a bad motor or compressor in the fridge. If possible try plugging the fridge into a different outlet. (If you use an extension cord to do this, make sure it is a thick gauge, in order to not cause an increase in amps through the smaller cord.) This should tell you rather quickly if the problem is with the breaker or the fridge. If it does turn out to be the fridge, you will probably find it is cheaper to replace a fan rather than the fridge, but the compressor (including installation) would probably cost more than a new fridge. (depending on how "fancy" it is)

It could be the compressor,contactor/overload,main control board bare wire, shorted defrost bar or control, have some one check the plug with an ohmmeter and see just how shorted the unit is

Take care

Hello,

The problem is the defrost timer you just replace on your refrigerator, you will need to check the ratings on the broken defrost timer to ensure it matches the ratings on the present defrost heater on your refrigerator, beside, you will need to test the continuity on your present defrost heater to see if the voltage rating is ok, because, if it can be tripping the breaker off while it kicks into defrost mode signify that the present defrost heater is not compatible with your refrigerator, it is either it is not well wired or fixed, and if it is, then, it means the defrost timer voltage rating is low compare to the former, you will need to get exact specification as the the broken one.

Take care.

    Hello,

If you do not have the old defrost timer anymore, you will need to check the manual of your unit to get the rating on the defrost timer that came with your refrigerator, or perhaps, check the inner sides of the refrigerator to see if there is any sticker where the rating is written, the new defrost timer is the problem, you will need to get the defrost timer that will match your device, that is why you need the rating on the old one.

    Take care.

I don't have a manual, as the refrigerator was purchased used, but on the plate that lists the model and serial numbers it says "5 amps". Is this what you are referring to?

Model 4001-ov trips the circuit breaker.

Assuming you have Paragon 4001 40 amp 120Volt timer
By-pass the timer so only pool pump is connected to breaker.
To do this, move wire from terminal 2 and connect to terminal 1.
If breaker no longer trips, then replace timer with Intermatic T101
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-wire-T104-Intermatic-timer.html#T101
Crossover wiring: Paragon terminal 1 goes to Intermatic terminal 1.
Paragon terminal 2 to Intermatic terminal 2.
Paragon terminal 3 to Intermatic terminal A
If breaker keeps tripping after bypassing timer, then tighten wires on circuit breaker and test again.
If breaker keeps tripping, then move wires to another same-size breaker.

Breakers trip when they sense overheating.
If motor is causing problem, you might need electrician to track down source of overheating.

Old refrigerator is not cold enough

I will need the model number of your refrigerator to help you better. Most older refrigerator have a defrost timer. But not knowing what yours is I won't be able to answer with a good answer. May things that cause the refrigerator to not cool properly are possible. So let me know what you find, Thanks, Sea Breeze

Fridge keeps tripping the circuit breaker

get an inexpensive clamp amp meter (Harbor Freight has them). Turn off power to the plug. Remove plug from wall but do not disconnet wires. turn fridge OFF. plug the unit in the recept. turn on the power. set the meter for the higest reading (amps) & clamp it around the black wire. turn the fridge ON & observe start up current & the "run" current. If the fridge is within limits on the data plate the problem is in the wiring circuit, maybe a loose connection either @ the plug or the breaker. if there are several plugs in the circuit, the problem could be in one of them. In addition, if there is a gfi plug in this circuit, it could be faulty also.

Fridge keeps tripping the circuit breaker

Your fridge should draw no more than 5amp. Presuming your breaker is at least 15amp there's a problem. Move to a different circuit first. If the condition persists check the start relay on the compressor. I have a suspicion the circuit may have another item you are not aware of.

It won't be the defrost timer, unusual, it will be the defrost element inside the freezer section behind the back panel or a shorted defrost klixon.

Fridge/freezer trips my circuit breaker

This sounds like a grounded wire in your defrost system. Start by finding the defrost timer and checking the wires. One may have been pulled loose or pinched while it was being moved.

Refrigerator tripping ground fault circuit

The thing you were "spinning" was the defrost timer, not a circuit breaker. The problem may be you have a shorted defrost heater; It is on a timer that runs it for 30 minutes every 8 hours of compressor use.
