First change the ignightor if its a glow plug

  • Anonymous Jul 31, 2013

Check the thermal fuse. You will need a multimeter to check the ohms. There is a handy troubleshooting guide tucked into the control panel which you take off with 2 screws on backside. You have the dryer unplugged while performing different checks so it is not dangerous.

I have a Whirlpool Cabrio Gas Dryer, Model WGD6400SW0, I have changed the thermal fuse and the igniter, after changing but the on first run everything works, on next run no heat?

It may be the heating element leave door open and put a screw driver in where the door switch is and then turn on and you should see a glow where the heat comes out ; if no glow replace the element

I looked through the peep hole in front of my gas dryer and I don't see anything lit.Dryer spins great, but doesn't heat up. What is the problem?

Igniter - The dryer's igniter is what ignites the gas that has entereddryer-ignitor.jpg through the gas valve. It will glow red, then when it reaches a certain temperature, it will trigger a thermostat that opens up the gas valve and that's when the dryer starts to heat the air. If the igniter has failed, the motor will still run but not produce any heat.

Gas dryer spins but no heat. where is the igniter so I can check it out?

The igniter is typically positioned at the front right side of the dryer. If your dryer has a front access panel or a peep hole, then you can open it or remove the small plastic plug to view the igniter working. If you do not have either, then the only way to view it is to disassemble it, which means you will not be able to test it when it's apart because the drum will not be supported correctly with the door off. If your igniter is working properly, you will hear it ignite the gas burner by listening closely to the dryer. Otherwise, listening to the igniter glow orange and not ignite may not make any sound. What to do when dryer runs but does not heat up

Things that could stop a gas dryer from heating:
- glow bar igniter, thermal fuse , coils on the gas valve, gas valve, thermostats, motor heat switch, timer, selector switch, sensor.
Problem -
Gas flame comes on first few times then quits and igniter keeps cycling on and off but never lets the gas go.
Answer ( most common ) -
Replace the coils on the Gas Valve.

Problem -
No flame, no igniter glowing at all,
Answer ( most common ) -
Inspect igniter for small burnt spot on dark gray or black part of igniter or check for 110 volts to igniter when dryer should be calling for heat.

Whirlpool Cabrio dryer gas does not stay lit after a few minutes.

It sounds like your solenoid coil(s) might be no good. Easy fix and not very expensive.

Does not heat

There is NO starter on a gas dryer burner assembly. The burner is controlled by gas valve coils and a glow bar igniter. Once the igniter reaches the appropriate current level, the gas valves open and you have ignition. The common problem is a weak igniter. You need to do a current measurement to make sure the igniter is within tolerance. If it is within specs, then I would agree with docjohn174 about replacing the coils. If its not within specs, you need to replace the igniter. Depending on the type of igniter you have, the current rating is as follows:

TWO BASIC IGNITER TYPES:

Carborundum (Cylindrical in shape) – needs to produce 2.5 to 3.0 amps for the gas safety valve to work.
Norton (Rectangular in shape) – needs to produce 3.2 to 3.7 amps for the gas safety valve to work.

NOTE: There is a UNIVERSAL FLAT BAR igniter on the market as well, that can be used as a substitute if the igniter type that came with your range is not available.

I still need an accurate model number in order to confirm WHICH type of igniter you have.

Whirlpool Gas Dryer

Pilot Light? Are you sure? All the gas dryers I've ever worked on were pilot-less. There should be a glow-type igniter that heats up when the dryer is turned on. When it reaches a certain current potential a gas valve is opened and the burner ignites. How old is this dryer? Maybe this is something I've never seen before. Is the dryer working at all? If not, here's a way you can narrow down the possibilities of problems:

You need to gain access to view the inside of the dryer, first. With the dryer plugged in, push the start button. If you hear a "click" and the igniter still does not come on, you probably have a bad igniter. If you don't hear a "click", the radiant heat senor is probably bad causing the igniter not to glow. You have to listen very carefully for the clicking noise, though. It's not very distinct with some dryers. Now, the igniter can glow sometimes and still be bad. The way your dryer works; it looks for a certain current potential (roughly 2.7 to 3.2 amps depending on type of igniter) on the igniter before the gas valve opens to ignite. If the igniter is weak, the gas valve may not open. This is a safety feature that prevents gas from leaking into your home. I hope this may help you. Let me know if I can assist further.
