I accepted the other guys solution on accident. I will do what you suggested & get back to you.
I get to the desktop, the icons show up & then it shuts down. I have read other posts & have checked the fan, I took it completely apart to check if the heatsink was clogged...it wasn't, and I have taken the battery out & it does the same thing, (although I do need a new battery). Now I'm at a loss.
Any suggestions?

My dog chewed my AC adapter cord & I started using a universal one. I have been using it for a few days with no problems. I have to say that it isn't a "perfect fit" like the one from the manufacturer.

Safe mode doesn't change anything and the computer doesn't stay on long enough to start System Restore

I know you told me, that's why I responded to you. Thanks.

I too was thinking it was a heating problem, but fan is running, fan & heatsink are clean, and after 4 hours of being turned off & completely cool, I still had the same issue.

I'm not trying to disagree with you. I am just wondering if the battery was the problem, why does it do the same thing when the battery is out of the machine? I am asking because I am assuming you know more about this kind of thing than I do.

Thanks for the explanation. I will see what happens with the new battery and/or adaptor & rate I'll rate your solution. :)
Take an ink pen and push the tip inside the jack and see if
the little pin wiggles, if so the jack is bad. You'll have to take the laptop
apart to fix it. Most times it is soldered onto the motherboard, so you
will have to desolder the old and solder a new one.
Maybe
you have a Virus or Infection that is causing your system to shut
down. Download and Install MalwareBytes then run a Quick Scan.
Go to www.google.com and in the search box type:
"Download cnet Malwarebytes" (without the quotes). Download and
install malwarebytes from the sites download.cnet/malwarebytes. When the
site opens up click on the Green Download button on the left. Do not
click the Red Download button, that's junk. When it finishes installing the Gui
Interface will open up with an offer to Accept a Trial Version or
Decline. CLICK DECLINE you want the totally free version. Run a
QUICK SCAN. As it scans, if it finds infections the number will be in
red. When it finishes scanning, click SHOW RESULTS. A notepad text
document will open up showing you the results. You can close the text
document and go back to the Gui Interface where you will click REMOVE SELECTED
RESULTS. The objects will already be selected for you. When it
finishes removing the objects click ok and it will sometimes reboot your
machine.
Maybe your system is running hot and shutting down to cool off. When it
shuts down are you able to restart it immediately or do you have to
wait and let it sit to cool off then it will restart?
Three things that will make a laptop run hot and shut off.
1. Dust - Dust inside the laptop, dust clogging the
vents and fans. Dust around the cpu and heatsink. It's best to take a
can of compressed air and blow out the dust.
2. A Fan that is not working. You'll have to take the laptop apart to fix it.
3. The Thermal Paste around the CPU and Heat Sink
had dried up or is too thin to keep the unit cool. You'll have to take
the laptop apart to get to it.
