Brother 4000D does not sew out patterns correctly and sometimes jams.The designs are sewn with parts missing or in wrong position. I have tried the same patterns on my Pfaff and no problems but my 4000D makes a mess of them. I have changed bobbin and upper thread and needle and cleaned machine but it just doesn't sew out correctly.Patterns are all in PES format from reputable digitisers.

Unfortunately, you are missing some software. You need the original PE-Design software CD. Then you can install the Upgrade software from https://support.brother.com/g/b/downloadtop.aspx?c=us&lang=en&prod=hf_inov4000deus for your OS version. Until this software is installed, the computer will not find the driver for the sewing machine. The driver is not available from Windows Update.

The USB drive may have new firmware that wasn't properly installed. To load firmware, insert the USB drive when the sewing machine is off. Then press and hold the Automatic Threading button while you turn on the sewing machine. Follow the directions on the screen (see the manual on page 224: https://download.brother.com/welcome/doch000013/nv4000ug04en.pdf ) . Turn off the sewing machine and then remove the USB drive before sewing.

Most memory sticks will work, but the smaller capacity sticks work the best.

If your stick has a lot of designs on it, the machine must read all the designs before bringing up any on the screen. Only keep a few on a tick at a time.

try unplugging it and letting it rest for 20 minutes? Sometimes that will reboot it.

Check needle is correct one and correctly positioned.

try changing the needle
clean under the needle plate & in the bobbin area for loose threads or lint
rethread the machine top & bobbin

Are you trying to transfer a built-in pattern from your machine to a USB flash drive? I'm not sure if built-in designs can be transferred in their original form. You might try editing the design a bit, save it to a memory space, then save it to the memory stick. If you have a manual, it should describe how to move designs from your embroidery machine to your computer, and vice versa.
If you are other readers have time to rate my answer, you'll help me become a better expert. Are you asking how to connect the Brother PE-400D sewing machine?  You have "how to connect the '4000D' to a computer and what risk if any".  Which machine are you asking about - these are two different sewing machines.  If you are inquiring about the Brother PE 400-D, then your answer is... this machine is NOT capable of being connected to a computer.  However, if you wish to purchase or download embroidery designs from the internet, you may look into purchasing the Brother PE Basic. This allows you to download embroidery designs from the internet to your computer hard drive and then load them on to a Brother memory card.  The Brother memory card can then be slipped into the proper slot for the memory card on the sewing machine.  You will need to purchase embroider designs that are in the PES format for you Brother machine to read it.  Hope this helps!
