I have a Viva Limited edition-need help with free motion foot

You can do embroidery or you can do free motion. If you're quilting a quilt sandwich (fabric, batting, backing fabric), you probably want to do free motion quilting. Embroidery would work better on fabric (with a stabilizer) but without the batting and backing fabric.

For free motion, you want a free motion foot--your machine's manufacturer probably provided one in the accessory kit (called a darning foot) or there are many generic free motion feet available for purchase (ie Big Foot quilting foot...). The BIG difference with a darning foot or free motion foot is that the shank is shorter than other presser feet because there needs to extra space between the presser foot and the needle plate so the quilter can easily manipulate the fabric. Usually, free motion quilters will drop the feed dogs to avoid feed dog interference with the fabric's movement, however, some quilters don't drop the feed dogs--just whatever works best for you and your machine. In addition, I use a Supreme Slider on the sewing machine surface--a silicone mat that provides a slick surface to help the fabric move.

There are a lot of web sites and video tutorials on free motion quilting. Take some time to watch them and then practice, practice, practice! It's an acquired skill so the more you practice, the better you will be.

You should be able to find some, if not all, of the presser feet you mention. You just need to determine what shank your machine has and make sure the presser feet you purchase have that same shank. (You may even have a snap-on adapter for your machine, so you just need to order the snap-on feet you want.)

Free Motion Quilting Foot for ALL SINGER KENMORE

Most machines include a "darning" foot, which is the equivalent of a free motion foot. However, there are multiple choices of free motion feet that can be purchased elsewhere which are made of various materials, in different shapes, and also with springs to create bounce--just something to consider, but not necessary.

Your machine should either have the ability to drop the feed dogs, or a cover plate that snaps over the feed dogs to prevent them from contacting the fabric when free motion quilting.

Your manual should have information as to what is included.

You will need a darning foot or free motion quilting foot for your machine (these feet are shorter than the regular feet which allows space between the foot and the needle plate to manually manipulate your fabric). Then drop the feed dogs and, if your machine does not have that capability, there should be a cover plate included with your machine that snaps over the feed dogs. Install a brand new needle in your machine, set it for a straight stitch, and test the stitch. Sometimes, the upper tension needs to be loosened a bit so the bobbin thread does not poke through the top of the fabric.

FWIW, I've found it helpful to use a "Supreme Slider" on the base of my machine. It is slick and allows the fabric to move easily. Special gloves are helpful too because your hand will become dry and begin to slip on the fabric. Using cheap rubber gardening gloves works for some people.

You need a special foot for free motion quilting--it is slightly shorter in height than a regular presser foot, which essentially provides space between the presser foot and the needle plate to manually move the fabric. Sometimes machines came with a standard darning foot accessory. Your Pfaff dealer probably has at least one style in stock. But there are other specialty feet you can probably use, ie Big Foot, clear free motion foot, C-shaped, oval, etc. You can also purchase a shank adapter (verify it is the correct shank for your machine) and use it with a kit of snap-on presser feet so you can have a variety of presser feet for different functions.

You first need to determine which shank the presser foot uses on your machine. You can compare your shank (current presser foot) with these photos to see which one your machine uses.

NOTE: If you purchase a snap-on presser foot, you will also have to buy a "shank adapter" that will attach the presser foot to the needlebar. Here are some pictures of snap-on adapters:

However, you will still need to make sure to buy the correct adapter for your machine. The GREAT thing about buying a snap-on adapter is you can add a lot of presser feet to your sewing machine accessories because you can purchase additional snap-on presser feet or even a complete set of snap-on feet that will all work with your adapter and your machine!!!

You will just snap one foot off and snap another on!!! Great idea!!!

OR--you can take your current presser foot along with the make & model of your machine and check with the local sewing repair shops to see if they have what you need.

FYI, once you know what shank your machine has, you can probably also find other specialty feet for your machine, ie walking foot, free-motion foot, etc.

If you are referring to the needle threader, there is a screw on right side to loosen when inserting needle. Tighten it back.

If you are referring to the needle foot, there should be a little flipping switch that releases foot. Place foot in place, lower needle arm and if aligned properly, foot will snap back on/into position.

if the foot pedal is plugged into the sewing machine correctly, then it would be a good idea to have the foot pedal check to see whats wrong with it and they can advise you wether to have it fixed or just replace it
