when playing online and the game freezes this could be caused by lag in the network connection. if you internet is slow, or someone you are playing with is slow, this will cause some issues in game play

it sounds like your internet connection is lagging very badly if it freezes on hitting the home button if you can try to move your ps3 closer to your network wireless router.

How old is your console? These symptoms are usually cased by laser failure.When playing online the data is usually saved to hard drive or online server so the online game will not lag and wait for load time. The lag you're experiencing most likely isn't the result of any physical abnormality, but rather you're network. How many people in your household share the same network? The more people on a network, the slower it will run. (I've actually experience this first hand) You might have too much people sharing your network for your game to run smoothly. Try to go on hours that everyone is not on. As for the repeated starts and stops, during game play, don't stress that. Its normal.

If I were you I would contact sony about this. Go to their website, u might hav a virus. I hav had my psp 4 2 years and hav never gotten this problem.
