The high voltage transformer may be the problem, because it feeds back secondary voltages to different parts of the set, for example is the vertical deflection voltage present at the ic, if memory serves me there should be around 26volts, if it's missing it means the fuse is open or the flyback pin is not generating the voltage.

From your descrition the problem is the picture tube, over a period of time the guns build up crud reducing the emission on the front screen which in turn causes fading and progressively gets worse until viewing becomes impossible. One possible solution is to have the picture tube rejuvinated by a tv tech to buy more time out of the set, but the improvement may last a few days to several months or more.

the light blinking six times indicates a probable horizontal circuit failure usually a shorted horiz out transistors but this is not the only component located in this circuit that could create this problem, sorry but i am affraid you'll need to get a tech to diagnose it to the component level or get another pc board to repair it. hope this helps some.

the picture tube is gone.
i repaired 150 sony xbr and kv series with that problem.sony has a single gun not three and has a great pix,but burn out faster.
there is a main screen control that you can adjust ,but the tube is gone.
on the back of the crt there is 3 gun drives r g b .
turn the color all the way down so it is black and white.
if there is a green ore purple tint,one gun is out of balance.
ajdusting the r g b controls so that black and white is normal is what you want to do.
the crt board has the screen bias voltage 800volts on it so be very careful and use an insulated screwdriver to adjust the drive controls.

This indicates "vertical stop," meaning that the TV's vertical output circuit is not working. Without having the set available, it's impossible to offer any suggestions for you to attempt repairs beyond looking for bad soldering. Other troubleshooting would require the circuit diagram (often available from the internet), tools and experience working on a live chassis. If you really want to keep the set and don't feel up to self-repair, it might be worth getting an estimate from a shop. These Sonys are nice sets.
