Leapfrog Leapster touch screen

Do you have any troubleshooting help for a Leapfrog Leapster? The touch screen doesn't seem to work anylonger (even after new batteries). Any help on how to fix it so that the pen will work with the touchscreen would be great. My niece gave it to me for my toddler to use...so I would guess it would be about 4-5 years old (the original Leapster).

I'm having the same problem! When it turns on you can hear the sound quite clearly but the screen just doesn't turn on. I called a 800-701-5327 for Leap Pad products and they offered to replace it at half the cost to me $35 plus shipping and handling. Not really the solution I'm looking for. I could go buy a new one for around $50.
    Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Same problem here...I called LeapFrog Help line at 800-701-5327. They said to recalibrate the screen by doing the following:

    1 - turn on unit

2 - press Home, Hint then B button

3 - Follow recalibration instructions onscreen.

    This didn't help me :-(

I also have the same issue. The touch screen doesn't work anymore after 2 months. I have read many complaints of this happening-but no solutions-like Leapfrog will fix it. I guess I will have to buy a new unit!

  • hoobies May 18, 2008

I have the same problem on a Leapster 5 months old. The screen is blank when you look straight at it, but you can just make out the activity if you hold the unit below eye level and tilt it forward as if you are looking down from the top of it. The problems started after my son threw up on it, him and me while playing it. (Sorry if too graphic. Being a nurse and mother, it isn't too much for me) I thought I wiped it pretty good right after wards. However, after I read all the helpful hints about cleaning around the edge of the screen, and I actually got lots of crumbs out. I was wondering if the fact that there was a liquid consistency has anything to do with the fact that it still won't work.
    Thanks!

  • tracylt Jun 14, 2008

My Leapster is less than 6 months old and it has a blank screen. I have sound and my pen works on the screen, as well as the Home button and pause. I just can't see any picture. I've turned it on and off, installed new batteries, cleaned around the edge of the screen, adjusted the brightness (circle buttons) and nothing is working. Again, I can use my pen on the screen, I just don't see any picture.

I have twins and my other daughter's Leapster did not turn on at all, so we had to replace it. I'm note having a good time with Leapster!

HELP! Now my twin's little sister wants one.....

I just did this, you need to have the unit off, press and hold down the question mark button as you turn it on. It will bring up a screen, press the B button. Then touch the plus sign with the stylus in each corner then the middle. It will send you back to the first screen. Turn it off, then back on. Try it again.
Hope that helps. THats the recalibration everyone is talking about.

I found a solution at http://www.watercoolergames.org/archives/000028.shtml

Basically, if there is gunk around the edge of the screen it will essentially disable the touch screen. I took a paper clip and cleaned out the small crevice around the edge of the screen then used a compressed air can to blow out the rest. I ran the touch calibration as noted in other posts and this time I actually had a target to select and everything worked after that.

This was the problem with ours and I couldn't figure out why in the world I couldn't get the screen to even calibrate. Thank you thank you thank you!!!

You need to calibrate your leapster...here's how:

(1) Do NOT insert a cartridge, turn the unit on and wait for the sign-in screen to appear.

(2) Hold down the Home, Hint and B buttons simultaneously.

(3) When the screen changes, press the A button.

(4) Using the Stylus, touch the center of the targets. Leapfrog Leapster touch screen - kb340_leapster_1.jpg

This solution may sound silly, but we have two leapsters (one is dead now - corroded on the inside). After a few weeks, we had sound and no picture on one. After several days of trying new batteries and pressing all the buttons and stuff, it ended up being one of the little buttons on the bottom that my son had been playing with. Try pushing the circle buttons at least five times each and see if that makes a difference. I had tried them, but only once or twice and it hadn't made a noticeable change. It wasn't until I started just pressing them over and over that I saw the change. Good luck!

This actually worked for me! I didn't think it was working because when it said to touch the center of the target it didn't seem to recognize it. But when I turned it off and back on it was working again. We had actually put it away for months because we could not figure anything out. Thanks for the help!

The pen on my sons leapfrog leapster won't work

Push the "A" button to enter the calibration.
There will be a little plus sign. Touch it with the stylus and continue to touch the plus signs with the stylus until you return to the calibration screen.

Leapfrog leapster unit was left outside during a rain storm. Unit turns on but has no display on the screen. Is it fixable?

Try letting it dry...maybe the sun if it is out. If not, just leave it in your house for a while. Even if it may seem dry on the outside and nothing is "leaking", there could be some moisture left in there. If that doesn't work, then your unit may be completely fried.
Hope that helps ^_^

If your Leapster2 does not respond to the stylus pen, it needs to be calibrated. Calibrating the Leapster2 is easy:
1) Ensure that a cartridge is not inserted
2) Hold down the Hint (?) button while turning the unit on. Continue to hold the Hint button down until the LEAPSTER menu appears.
3) When the LEAPSTER menu screen appears, press the A button
4) Touch each of the crosshairs that appear with the stylus
