I have a SimpleTech 500GB external hard drive model (96300-41001-160) It will not turn on when I turn my computer on, but if I unplug it then plug it in it will work. Do I have a bad Auto Run File and where do I download a fix for this.

It's not a 'charging lead' as the unit has no battery. It is a Power Adapter that delivers 12 volts to run the HD Motor the same as if it was in a computer. You can get them on Amazon for around $15.

HP windows 8 does not recognize simpleteck hard drive

I purchased a SimpleTech SimpleDrive Pininfarina 500GB External USB 2.0 Hard Drive - Onyx for my Vista machine and all was well. Then I purchased a Windows 7 machine. It would not recognize the devise. I contacted SimpleTech only to be told my model cannot be used on machines newer that the Vista. Recently I purchased a Windows 8.1, did a little research, plugged the SimpleTech into the 8.1 and reformatted it using the Windows feature. The SimpleTech is alive and well on my 8.1.

replace all elctrical leads to your hard drive aswell as IDE,SATA leads from your motherboard to hard drive

I would unplug the external drive then shut down your computer. Plug the drive in(be sure the USB port is in good working order.)Turn the computer on. If it does not recognize the drive search online for tech support for that particular drive. Install any drivers or software. Be sure to find out if the drive is compatible with your operating software. Make sure all connectors are seating firmly and correctly. Make sure that everything is plugged in where it should be plugged in.

How do I use my simpletech external hard drive. I

I have a 500GB and a 1TB. Both drives if they work at all, is because you have to apply the power after usb is connected. The 500MB still good but the 1TB took a big dump.

Okay, so it should be picking up with that machine. First try re-seating all cables (power and USB both sides) and also try plugging it into a different USB port. Be patient and give it a few minutes to find it. Let me know whether or not that works.

Get a new AC adapter for it. I had the same problem, & I had an AC adapter that was the same type for the modem & I tried that one & it was working again.

Ext hard drives, once enabled, should be seen like any other logical drive, on the system. this one appears to have an issue with the usb connector. Go to control panel, system, hardware profiles and see if there are any of the items with a yellow ? mark on them, and let us know your results.

ok..those drivers are on the website of the maker of the computer. so there, click on support, and drivers, then scroll down until you see the USB or utilities links.

Most USB devices do not work when connected to a computer as the computer boots up (unless the BIOS allows this function).
Boot up the computer first and then insert the USB device/hard drive.

If you need to remove a USB device when the computer is running then click on Safely Remove Hardware - click on that device and ONLY REMOVE the device when advised to do so. Failure to do this will eventually cause the device to fail.
