Transfer to new computer

I am not sure what you are asking. This is an external drive that can be moved from PC to PC and used just like a USB flash drive. What type of data are you trying to transfer? What is the source? What is the destination?

When i plug in the usb to my computer it is not recognized and does not show anywher

If you have a SimpleTech SimpleDrive connected to your computer and you're experiencing problems with the external hard drive, there may be several reasons why it's malfunctioning. Troubleshooting your computer can help rule out common problems and the possibility that the hard drive may be defective. If you recently purchased the device and suspect there is something wrong with it, return the defective drive to SimpleTech or the reseller for a replacement. Incompatible USB Port Problems SimpleTech SimpleDrive plug and play options makes it easy for you to connect the device to your computer. But you may encounter problems if your computer's USB (Universal Serial Bus) ports are not compatible with the external hard drive. Make sure your ports are powerful enough to operate the drive. USB 2.0 ports are recommended, but if you're using an older computer with 1.0 ports, the hard drive will function much slower or you may receive an error message that the device is not compatible with your system. b> Missing External Drive Letter If you're unable to find the SimpleTech external hard drive's letter on your desktop after you have installed the drivers for the device, it's possible that the external drive may be assigned to another drive. Sometimes, the hard drive is assigned to a network drive and you may need to manually change the drive's letter in Disk Management. b> SimpleTech SimpleDrive Incorrectly Formatted b> SimpleTech SimpleDrive is normally pre-formatted for Windows NTFS (New Technology File System), but Mac users may need to copy the backup software and reformat the external hard drive for FAT32 or Mac OS to be able to use the external drive. If the external hard drive is not formatted correctly for your system, it may not function or work properly. b> External Hard Drive Inaccessible If you receive an error message that says "Drive Inaccessible," the SimpleTech SimpleDrive may not be able to read the service area of the platter. If the external hard drive emits a loud or abnormal sound, this could mean the device is failing. Test the drive on another computer to see if it is working properly. Otherwise, the external hard drive's surface area may be damaged or corrupted. Replacing a Defective Hard Drive You can return a defective hard drive that is under warranty to SimpleTech. The manufacturer will exchange the device if the seal is not broken. But if you break or tear the seal on the case, any warranty claims will not be accepted and the device will be returned back to you. SimpleTech will only accept the device if you contracted a commercial data recovery company to retrieve critical data from the external hard drive and the seal needed to be broken. Before returning the defective drive, you will need to secure a RMA (Return Merchandise Authorization) approval number from SimpleTech and furnish any invoices or documentation regarding the data recovery company's services or if its a usb external drive you might need a usb 3 card installed on your computer your computer might not have enough usb output power USB 3 card will provide more power when needed to the device to gain maximum throughput and conserve power when the device is connected but is idling http://blog.premiumusb.com/2010/09/usb-2-0-vs-usb-3-0/ these can be purchased on Ebay cheap and easy to install http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/PCI-e-PCI-Express-USB3-0-Card-new-NEC-720200AF1-chipset-/330608109325?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf9c7670d for roughly $9 or $10free postage Hope this helps. b>

My Simpletech external hard-drive fell and now is not recognized on my computer. When i turn it on the light goes on and it sounds like the disk is turning but it makes a clicking sound every second o

the clicking noise could either be power trying to make a connection with your hard drive or the hard drive reader arm has been damaged and is skipping across the platters on your hard drive make sure its getting power to the hard drive alsoyou could give the hard drive a firm tap to side to try to free up the reader arm then try it again

If the hard drive that has failed is the same one that you are trying to recover from might the reason that you are getting this error.

This could be an issue where the part of the hard drive you are trying to access is corrupt and not accessible which would explain the reason that it would let you access the other partition.

Now I have seen cases where Malware can break the link of a Hard Drive.

So let's try a couple of steps.

Let's go back in to "Disk Management"

Lets right click on the partition that you are not able to access and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths"

Now try selecting a new Drive Letter.

This will restore the path if it has been broken.

There are also Data Recovery programs that might be very helpful to recover your important information.

I have a simpletech 500 gb external hard drive

Hello,

Please make sure that the drive is properly plugged in and the drivers are properly installed. If you cant hear the HDD spinning, There is some serious problem and you must take it to an authorised service center. Opening the HDD on your own or by unauthorised people can lead to its damage. Also kindly try to check the same on other computers so that you can rule out the HDD failure ISsue.

Thanks

I have my Simpletech 500gb drive pluged in but

Okay, so it should be picking up with that machine. First try re-seating all cables (power and USB both sides) and also try plugging it into a different USB port. Be patient and give it a few minutes to find it. Let me know whether or not that works.

Hi, I'm trying to do a backup of my photos, documents and music, but am unable to locate those itmes on the C Drive.Any suggestions?

you can use the windows search option to be able to find those files, but that will take a long time. you can use a backup drive or a backup software, they are almost reliable. if the files are important, then i would recommend taking a backup with the help of a technician. My external drive will not open on my new HP computer

Unplug the external. Then Try rebooting cold. When the computer stops +30 sec. Reboot the computer and plug the external when you see the HP splash screen.
  • If that does not work, make sure you have the drivers for the ext. for your configuration. Win 8, 8.1?
  • You can go to the site where your external was developed at and make sure you have latest drivers and if there is a problem associated with your device.
  • On newer machines there is also 3.0 USB connections. While it should not make any major difference, make sure that your ext. is not plugged into a 3.0 USB. The 3.0 USB is blue in color.
