Power on password forgotten! How can the computer be started?
Someone borrowed my compaq nx6110 and returned it later with a problem: the computer cannot be started, the power comes up but it is asking for a power-on password which no one knows. It doesn't even enter BIOS Setup. It just ask for that password which when you try three times, and it is always wrong, you have to restart again and try afresh for another failure! Pls, help.
Please try using the following password without the quotes
"Compaq"
If the password does not work, let us know. Also please let us know the BIOS software that you have.

The Power on Password is set from the BIOS configuration. Ask that person who borrowed your Compaq for the password. Once you have this password, you can enter the BIOS configuration and remove/disable this password.
Depending how old you Compaq is, removing the BIOS battery and main battery for 15+ mins may remove this password and restore the BIOS to the factory default (insert both batteries again) and configure the BIOS Date and Time etc.
BUT if the the password is stored on an EEPROM chip then removing will not fix this problem. There are no backdoor passwords available.
