256 mb is a little small for your laptop.1/4 of a gig.

some laptop need only one type of memory
so you may have the wrong type.

try taking you 256 memory and boot if it works then try taking the old memory out and put the 256 memory in ( on it's own )
and boot to see it there is a conflict with the memory types.

when i go for memory i take the old one with me to the shop so i get the same type and i normaly go for a gig or 2 :)
as 256 is not worth much 256 on its own will get your pc / laptop running till you try and use it to E.I. surf ect it will be as slow as a snail.
but if it runs with the 256 then they might not be compatable with each other
I had this problem befor.

Remove the memory ... try again ...

there is the possibility your memory was not seated correctly and/or it is not the correct memory.

remove it to get going again ...

256 is a strange number ...

please go to www.4allmemory.com and have them scan your computer. They will make recommendations based on that scan. Compare what you got with their recommendation.

Compaq lap top presario f700 won't do any thing

try taking the hard drive and memory cards out then turning the computer back on without hard drive and memory cards for 1 minute then power it off (unplug it ) then put the memory cards in only then plug cord in turn unit on for 1-3 minutes then power down (unplug it) then add hard drive make sure there is no power going to the computer when adding the hard drive to the unit. at this point do let the unit set for 8 hours then try rebooting it should restore itself. if this don't work sorry there is a limit for what I $hare online.

Presario won't recognize second 256 RAM

Remove the original module, install just the new one and then start your computer. If it doesn't start, the memory you bought is bad. The system boards used in the Compaqs will auto-detect memory, and there are no jumpers or BIOS settings needed.

Added memory but one memory card (Original) not recognised

OK, according to Crucial.com your RAM does need to be installed in matched pairs.

Here is a link for your computer information:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.aspx?model=Presario%20SR1460AN

If you get another 512MB module and install both pair, it should work well.

What are the ram limits on a compaq presario 5000a. I put 256 ram in the compaq and it only reads 128. Why?

You can install up to 3 sticks of 512 mb of memory. Did you add a 256 stick to the already-existing 128? You need to put DDR266/PC2100 memory. To troubleshoot, remove the 128 stick and put your 256 in and see if it is recognized. You will know right away from the bios screen. Memory needs to be the same type.
