Hi,
I have the KDF-50a12u and the picture has been getting darker and darker then the TV started to power off randomly then the standby light would flash red/green.
I have now replaced the lamp with a new £160 bulb and housing this has improved the picture 100% however the tv keeps turning off, the standby light flashes red 3 times then green. PLEASE help im pulling my hair out.
Please recheck Lamp Cover and make sure it is fixed in its space securely as 3 times red blink shows lamp cover error.
There is small safety switch in TV cabinet under lamp cover that has to be pushed by lamp cover if it is fixed in its position properly. That switch is not being pressed by lamp cover and causing this error.
Thanks.
I just checked service manual of this TV for 3 times blink error and here is correction.. (I was wrong in first response, sorry for that)
It is not lamp cover error as lamp cover error gives
2 blinks.
3 times blink is Lamp error. (as per service manual) either lamp is burnt out or ballast supply is defective.
Thanks.
Is replacement lamp Sony original one or aftermarket/ compatible/ alternative lamp?
Yeah, Lamp is cause of this 3 blink error, please install Sony original lamp for TV safety.
This alternate lamp is consuming more current then its rating and protection circuit sense it to send error signal to system control.
Thanks.
oops, links seem broken,
Click THIS Sony official link please..
and can see HERE its packing/ box

The Ballast sense turn on faulty replace the lamp ballast and the lamp door sense switch, Also some times the heat gererated from the lamp can slighty warp the door causing intermittent door to switch connectivity.

Hi,
Thanks for you help.
I have confirmed by opening a back panel that the lamp door switch is engaged when shut. I should have added that the TV does not power off strait away its normally after 5-10 mins. Any other ideas?
Thanks Again
Chris
Hi,
the replacment lamp is a philips one i bought off ebay it has restored the picture to the quality that it came from the sony center in, so i doubt its the lamp also the tv did this before i changed the bulb.
The only difference since changing the lamp is the improved picture.
This is a weird issue as it turns of randomly sometimes after 1 min sometimes after 5.
Thanks
Chris
So let me get this right. The lamp i bought today from a shop for £160 is no good?? even tho i asked them several times if this was a sony original and they assured me that the philips components where used in the sony original and that i would have no problems. How can i be sure its the lamp so i have some evidence when i go back to the shop tomorrow.
Regards
Chris
