Isn't receiving power. Ports seem "loose" in back.

LaCie 500GB - Part #300871. For the last year or so the drive would drop off the desktop randomly. I was suspecting that the FW port was bad because it seems "loose" when I put in or pulled out the cable. Then a few weeks ago, the drive wouldn't mount at all. No power light coming up on the front. I bought a new power supply from eBay and still won't work. I feel like the actual hard disk is OK but maybe the plate that holds all the ports is bad? I'd like to have it repaired if there's any advice on what is the best place to send it.

Couple of things. Lacie power supplies are notorious for their failure rates. Don't buy a new one just phone lacie and they will send you a new one no questions asked (that's how bad they are!)
Second, the circuit boards in some are pretty poor and the FW sockets can actually break off.
I used to recommend lacie to my clients - but not any more.

Lacie by stark external hard drive is suddenly not recognised by my computer (always worked until now) and has a permanent red light. Tried all usb ports and restarting computer. Whats wrong?

have you dropped it? it could be any number of disc errors, two of the most common errors are caused by viruses and dropping. try putting the hard drive in the freezer for a day or so in a moisture and static resistant bag. just a possibly remedy, if that doesn't work, try removing the casing on the hd and setting it as a secondary drive after you plug it inside a desktop computer.

My LaCie 500GB Quadra spins and clicks. Have tried (Mac) DiskWarrior and Disk Utility, but the drive ignores them and spins, clicks, and the blue light flashes

If you can hear clicking then I am afraid there is a serious problem with the hard drive.

The noise you can hear is usually known as "the click of death" when referring to hard drives.

Make sure you use ONLY the cable that came with it or a SHORTER one.

Dont connect via a USB hub

Make sure you only user the power supply that CAME WITH IT.

Most common causes are that the drive unit was dropped or mishandled or just plain old age

There is no known cure unless the data is mission critical

In which case you could sent it to a data recovery specialist but this is usually VERY expensive.

If you are advised to place it in a freezer or anything similar then that is up to you
but my advise would be to run from the person who may give this advise.

This is very old fashioned advice and meant for very old types of drives that used to get very hot.

If it a drive that was / is from an external enclosure then you could still use the enclosure and just place a new hard drive in there.

Another way to test it it to remove it from the enclosure and connect it directly to a PC with a suitable interface eg. SATA or IDE.

Also getting a clicking noise and not showing up on computer

sounds like youve fried your hard drive. Has the computer been dropped recently?? Or you got a disk boot sector virus that has blocked access to the hard drive. the clicking is the data arms scratching into the disk media. Either way it means a new hard drive.

XP doesn't recognize 500GB external Lacie after almost 2 years

try it on different usb ports on your system
try replacing the cable which connects the hard drive with the usb port
if this does not works the problem lies in the portable hard drive and i think it would be under warranty period so get it checked

When plugged in, icon doesn't appear on the desktop.

We have a few of these Lacie Design by F.A. Porsche 500GB drives in our office. Our editor's drive stop working this morning (was fine the day before) and had all her files backed up from the last three years on it and was making a very soft clicking sound. After taking the whole thing apart and trying drive in another F.A. Porsche caddy with no success, we tried a different power supply hey presto it started up no problems. My drive that suddenly stop working earlier in the year we tried a power supply from a external Lacie DVD Writer and again drive is working. Just to make sure tried the original power supply and would not mount. So if your hard drive stops working it maybe the power supply rather the the hard drive.

Hi, my Lacie seems ti=o have stopped working. Power seems to go into it as the power light comes on (amber) but then it beeps and the seems as if it does not spin

this is a common issue however its bad news, your inter motor stopt working and there's no point repairing it and you cant get your data back either

External hard drive

500Gb Lacie D2 Quadra with the same problem of flashing led and not mounting on the desktop (Mac G4 Mirror), traced to the power supply (57w) going down on power, both 12v and 5v supplies are available but the main power to run the drive drops to below an adequate output, hence the clicking and whirring evident from the drive with simultaneous flashing led.

Testing with another Lacie power supply (250Gb D2) this time a 34w unit got the drive up and running, however, and this is the reason for this post, this lower power PSU failed a week later whilst waiting for a warranty replacement from Lacie (5 weeks and still waiting for the new PSU from them. they have no stock)

Message for all Lacie D2 users, check the power supplies first, test with another Lacie PSU, do not run the drive on a lower rating (34w) PSU it will fry it and leave you with another failed power supply.

If you are in a tight spot use the temporary power supply to move your data to another drive and get the correct 57w power supply before running the drive again.

Don't do as I did assume any Lacie power supply will run any Lacie hard drive, they won't, fortunately I had a second back up, but am 2 drives down and no new PSU's available to buy anywhere.

Try and purchase another spare 57w power supply, something all D2 users should do for long term security, as these do not seem to be very reliable and getting warranty support from Lacie on these is currently impossible.

The lack of 57w power supplies from Lacie and its distributors across the world is surely a warning to be noted!!!!!!

Buyers beware!

LaCie drive does not come on

Maybe the usb chip in the hard drive enclosure that converts ide into usb failed. You could replace the enclosure (they sell enclosures at best buy) but it could be quite a hassle.
