sometimes the wires inside the cable will be damaged due to bending or stretching or placing heavy equipment upon the cable

just replace the cable of the hard disk, when you plugged the external disk drive you got that windows could recognize the USB device change the cable everything should work fine again,

check the USB leads that attach to the motherboard usually red-white-green-black make sure they are securely seated and have no dust build up on them dust will cause static and a lot of unforeseen problems

if this fails to fix the problem you might have to install a usb 2 or 3 card they are cheap and easy to install you can buy these on Ebay very cheap hope this helps

Flashes green and red, desktop

Those flashes signal communication error. Try to connect the unit using another USB cable that will be plugged in another socket - if you get the same error then the defect is internal, either in the interface between the actual hard disk and the casing or in the board of the hard disk itself. In both cases the unit is effectively dead, with the data being lost if it's the first case.
If you want to recover the data in the second case the casing will have to be open, the hard disk extracted and inserted in another casing made for PATA laptop hard disks.

My LaCie Rikiki is no

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

The external drive powers on but when i connect it

1. Make sure you have enough power with the USB port you are using to power the drive. Some of these require a two USB port cable to provide the proper power.
2. See if the drive is present on the PC when plugged in by right-clicking My Computer and selecting Manage and selecting Disk Management to see if the drive is listed there but it just doesn't have a drive letter associated with it.

Can you please provide me

I found This power supply

It is listed as suitable for the Porsch drives, but the model number on your current unit should tell if it's the right one.

At 12V 3A it is rated higher than the common 12V 2A which is a common rating for hard drive power adapters, and also supplies 5V. These may be required for your drive.

The site has other LaCie power adapters if the model number does not match.

My Lacie Hard Drive is not seen any longer by my

Hello,

please test the hard drive on any other computer and see what happens there. if the hard drive doesn't work in more than 2 computers, then consider how old is the power supply that the drive has? has it been dropped or anything similar?

the powersupplies wear out within 1 year of use, and need to be replaced after that, or you may want to replace the entire hard drive case.

if the drive has been dropped its no longer functioning.

please test the drive on another computer and let me know the results.

Thanks,
ekse
