Try hooking the laptop up to an external monitor, use a vga cable. If the main display has died, the laptop may default a secondary if given the chance. If the laptop sounds like it boots but you can't see a screen on the external display try holding down the Fn key and at the same time tap the F5 key, this will toggle the display from internal to external. If a screen still cannot be seen then you may have lost the video processor on the motherboard.
I understand that.....I massacred my first one too....I can damn near build em blindfolded at this point. Good luck either way, If you need the Acer service manual and disassembly guide let me know and I'll attach it in an email if I haven't done so already.
Here is the service manual.

Your touchpad and keyboard are run by separate cables and can both be accessed by removing the keyboard. There might be a button that turns off the touchpad right above the touchpad I believe. It is possible the keyboard cable came out of its socket, the lock down tabs on those are fragile at best...good luck with it.

I will try the vga cable first then the F5, Fn but if it is the videoprocessor on the motherboard could be a real problem replacing it based on doing it myself.
It is a 5100 Aspire. Harddrive is working, software seems to be working based on timing and sounds but no screen.
Only paid 10 bucks for it at a garage sale so I hope I cn buy with a replacement screen or toggle solution. Have opened laptops before and done serious damage (one I am working on now is such a creacher.
That was a service manual for a dell 600
I have an ACER 5100.
I tore apart my current ACER Aspire 3003 when it was relatively new thinking the problem wss a loose AC Connection in the rear of the computer to the motherboard. After I had ruined the keyboard connection, touchpad and lost all the screws realized it was simply a shorted $25 dollar AC Adaptor. I was making an sssumpiton that the problem I wss having with my ACER was similar to problem I had with my previous portable. Anyhow so much for computer genius.
Took non-working screen of Acer Aspire 5100 portable to a local Target Store and plugged in one of their monitors to my laptop.
Turned on the laptop and windows screen came up on the Target Monitor.
Touchpad and keys did not seem to work but it does not look like the problem is with the Video Card.
Checked anohter site and some said something about a video plug near the hinge and two thinly soldered connections on the plug burning out from leaving in hibernation mode - quick solder fix. Not sure if the keys and touchpad not seeming to work has anything to do with this possible problem scenerio. ParrotHead was helping me. I am going to take the approach the screen needs to be replaced and try and insert my Acer Aspire 3003 Screen (hopefully it will fit) after removing the Acer Aspire 5100 Screen.
