During the final spin the machine made a very loud noise and jerked violently. Now you can hear the motor running but it will not spin. The drum can be turned freely by hand. Is this a catastrophic failure?
1. If the machine will not rotate by itself, but the motor is running, then it is definitely the belt. Open the back panel with the cord unplugged. It is easy to replace the belt.
2. There is a drain pump accessible from the front bottom panel (2 screws). This pump operates while it is draining. Make sure both the main motor and this pump are operational. If the main motor does not move, then replace the motor.

There are 2 shock absorbers/springs attached to the drum. If one of them breaks it will cause a loud banging noise when you wash heavy loads. This is an easy fix. The part is about $22.00 and it is accessed throught the front bottom panel.

Travioso, there was two service flashes out on this model concerning the seal and bearing which means they had an issue with this washer. The howling noise you are hearing is the bearing and will need the new designed triple seal and bearing kit. This should be covered under your warranty, I believe it is 5 years. The numbers for the service flashes are TDL-0048A-B. Call Maytag and inquire about these service flashes, these should be covered. Catriver.
