I have a 2001 Mercury 50 hp 4 stroke motor that i want to know how to service myself. My husbands keeps storing without running gas out of motor so it is getting varnish build up and i have to get it serviced. In the past i have performed my own repairs on my vehicles so i know i can do this.

You Can Do This without a doubt! First of all, Keeping the gas treated (always treat your gas, so you don't have to worry about what's left between seasons) is half the battle. Your four stroke motor is a lot like your car (only be sure to always use marine specified parts, especially for electrical, ignition or fuel related parts). I'm including a couple of valuable links. One is to Merc's Customer support. Always a great place to start. The other is to a parts forum. get to know and join a mercury outboard forum or two where you can ask specific questions and of course come back here for help! https://www.mercurymarine.com/en/us/service-and-support Forums Mercury Marine Parts Forums

Fuel varnish can be difficult to remove and is troublesome if it begins to flake off.

I can't help with the servicing which is a largely intuitive process based on general mechanical experience and knowledge and is improved by model knowledge and manufacturer's information.

There are plenty of fuel system cleaners and additives designed to remove varnish and the best way to learn how to service your outboard will be to observe a professional - most professional types would be pleased to teach you the basics about your motor for a consideration.

SOURCE: Perform Service Light comes on

This is a setting that can be reset to 2000 miles - when it counts down to 0 you get the "Perform Service" alert. I believe if you use the Step function you will see "XX miles to Service" Use the reset button to set this back to 2000.

SOURCE: 4 stroke Yamaha 50HP -Runs rough at all throttle levels

If it has the old points system you will need to set the points also adjust the carburatior screw the screws all the way in and back out 2 1/2 turns then get it to run turn the air mixture screws till it runs smooth. you want it slightly lean then enrichen it slightly, afterword shut the engine down and look at the plugs if they are gray black they are ok. good luck.

SOURCE: I want to service my vehicle

If you want to do a full service:
Change oil and filter
Change fuel filter
New spark plugs
Check all fluids:
Transmission fluid
Brake fluid
Power steering fluid
Coolant (anti-freeze)
Rotate tires, and do a grease job, you will need a grease gun for that.
If you want just the minor
Change oil and filter
fuel filter, and spark plugs.

Mercury 1989 60 HP Outboard Motor manual to find gas to oil ratio

50:1 But if your doing mostly low rpm cruising (trolling) then you could reduce that a bit to 75:1 to help reduce smoke. If you do mostly mid to higher rpm cruising, then 50:1 (1 pint to 6 gallons. )
Or 200mls in 20 liters if your Canadian.

I have a 1998 model E25RMECA I NEED TO KNOW WHAT TYPE GAS TO USE IN IT. AND IF IT IS 2 CYCLE OR 4CYCLE.

I found a mixture of sites for the information
one owner of a 1998 25 hp evinrude says that it is a 2 stroke with a fuel mix ratio of 50:1 as 25:1 is a bit smokey
another site says that the recommended octane fuel rating is 87 although it might run better on 91
best advice is to find an evinrude service dealer and get the right information as the later 25 hp units are etec engine which will be 4 strokes

I have a mercury 25, 2 stroke, need to know what type of oil and the ratio of oil to gas

I would use Mercury 2 stroke oil...it comes in a black bottle with a red label. Also you can use Quicksilver brand...that is made by Mercury but marketed to sell to stores like Wal Mart. If you are breaking in a new or rebuilt engine then you mix 100:1 for the first two tanks. Any normal application you should be running 50:1 all the time. Keep in mind that I have been to Mercury School and this is coming straight from the horses mouth. No matter what it says on the tank, or what anyone else tells you...you should always be running at 50:1 unless you are in the break in period of the engine.
