I have tried several different headphones, all of which are operative when plugged into other devices. So the problem is not with the headphones.

If you have a headphone jack at the front and the back, it may be a wire to the front panel is not connected properly on the Motherboard.

Check your sound device levels. you may need to enable that headphone port before it is usable. you can do this in the control panel tab. reinstalling your sound drivers wouldn't hurt also.

SOURCE: PLANTRONICS Headphone won't work with IP 501 sip, polycome phone
Dont plugged into the headset jack. Like Nortel, connect headset line with phone base unit in receiver jack and plugged your phone receiver wire into headset or plantronic base unit. This will work. I am sorry, my english is not too good but hope you understand it now. But the pully is not working properly with IP501..I mean it is not good to pickup IP501 receiver and put it back right place.
SOURCE: speaker/headphone jack won't work
It may not be the problem of sound card,
try following:
1) try uninstalling/reinstalling the sound drivers from device manager.
2) put the laptop to sleep(standby) mode and than wake up.
