It sounds like your camera, the Nikon Coolpix MN35Z, is experiencing an error with the mode dial. The "mode dial indefinite" error message indicates that the camera is unable to recognize the position of the mode dial. This can be caused by a variety of issues, such as a malfunctioning mode dial, a damaged mode dial, or a problem with the camera's internal components.
To troubleshoot this issue, you can try the following steps:
Make sure the mode dial is not damaged or stuck. If the mode dial is stuck or damaged, it may not be able to move freely, causing the error message to appear.
Check the camera's battery and memory card. If the battery is low or the memory card is full or damaged, the camera may not be able to operate properly.
Try resetting the camera. To do this, remove the battery and memory card, wait a few minutes, and then reinsert the battery and memory card.
If the problem persists, the camera may need to be repaired by a professional. It is recommended to contact the manufacturer or an authorized service center for further assistance.
Take the camera to a camera shop. They can gently pry off the knob and re-attach it in the proper position. It should be just a splined press fit and therefore not an expensive fix.
Make sure that the dial for selecting either video capture or image capture is not stuck somewhere in the middle , therefore a good idea would be try moving it to different positions and then back to the usual image mode and this message would go away ...
Hope this helps ..:) Your feed back would be appreciated.

Please check whether the mode dial is on 'Mup' or 'Lv'. If it is, then the camera is on mirror lock-up position (Mup) or LiveView mode (Lv). If any of these is selected, press the mode dial lock and rotate the dial to 'S' mode.
I used to have the same problem. Make sure the picture of the setting you are using on the turn dial is lined up with the beige pointer on the top of the camera. When you turn the dial, you can feel it lock into position. It could be that the dial hasn't quite clicked into the right position and just needs adjusting.
