I need help with determining what likely parts need to be swapped out after an electrical short in my stand mixer

I shorted out our American Kitchenaid 600 Series Stand Mixer when I used the wrong plug on the transformer we had to use in Australia. I am confident in swapping out any parts but I was hoping for guidance in determining what parts need to be replaced. ie Motor, Control Assembly, Motor to Control Lead, Hall Effect Sensor? I cant see anything else electrical that could have been damaged. Thanks

Kitchen aid stand mixer has sparks inside when on

Where do you see the visible sparking?? There are two places in the mixer where this could / should happen. One is at the brushes where they meet the commutator on the armature of the motor. I don't think you can see that place during operation unless you have the rear cover off and know just how and where to look down the tube of the motor head. The second place is at the rear of the machine at the copper contacts on the speed control switch. You can see in the machine during operation at this location. You should not be overly concerned about this...unless...you are seeing constant arcing, then you need a new speed control switch as the resistance (amount of metal to conduct the electric current) between the contacts is worn down. This will cause a constant arc and will eventually wear down and then freeze closed and ...Walla! the mixer will not work any more and it can short out the rest of the electrical in the mixer. So; if you are seeing short intermittent sparks at the rear of the machine , well no worries, if it is constant then replace the speed control switch if it is anywhere else it is an electrical short and that can be very dangerous indeed. Tell us where you are seeing the sparks...and we can FixYa.

Krups ka950 food mixer no speed control always top speed

The speed selector circuit has been compromised but either an electrical short, or disruption from particles that entered the switching mechanism and covered contacts. Needs technical attention.

I ran my kitchenaid mixer at the wrong voltage, and the motor sparked. But I only turned it on for a couple seconds. What's the likelihood that I damaged it - and what would be the signs of damage

It wont run anymore or it smokes or it won't run at all. over voltage can short out the armature the stator or the phase control board. It can also short out any of the wires attached to the speed control plate at the rear of the mixer. If you turn it on again at proper voltage and it works the chances are that you have cut the life of the electrical parts by half their life. If it sparks or smokes you have some serious repair work to do to it. The good news is that you can replace all the electric parts for less than $100.00 bucks and an hour or two of you time...OH!!!! and about two rolls of paper towels.

Is my mixer internally short circuited? How to remedy?

It sounds like your mixer has a bad ground connection. Sorry electrical is not my forte, but something in the mixer wiring is the problem, not the wall outlet..

Burnt a 110V mixer when plugged to a 230v european appliance. KitchenAid ref.:KSM150PSMC Thanks JMP

go to a technician and have the motor rewinded again. because your machine encountered a short circuit so the motor needs to have a new rewind. Hope the other parts are not affected.

Every time I switch on my KitchenAid mixer, the electrical system trips - what could be wrong - will it be expensive to fix?

You're wiring can't take that much load OR your mixer is short circuited. Test it by connecting to a different outlet first If it still trips.

I have a 600 watts stand mixer, one time i put too much flowers and it just stop mixing in the middle and making the loud jam noise. now it won't complete the circle and alway jam half-way and stop...

It sounds like you have a stripped gear. I, too, had this problem when my bride dropped a wooden spoon into the bowl. You'll need to disassemble the mixer and determine the part(s) that need to be replaced. With a google search for parts for your model, you can not only locate the exact part, but can also get exploded diagrams for your model. Very handy indeed for disassembly/reassembly. I'd get the diagrams first and then determine the parts needed.

Hope that this helps you.

Speed selector is fussy, and a short has occured

CCFSILVER - When you say your speed selector is fussy, do you mean fussy in a 'electrical' sense or fussy in a 'mechanical' sense? Also, you didn't say if the short is causing power to the motor to be cut or what specifically the short is doing. For now I'll assume that you mean 'fussy' in an electrical manner. That being said, the speed selector is fixable. If your mixer is under warranty, contact KA and ask them to remedy the problem. If it is not under warranty, then you can attempt to fix it yourself. This will not be for the weak of heart, as you have to disassemble your mixer. It that is not within your capabilty than you should take the mixer to an authorized KA repair shop in your area. If you think you can do it your self, great!
First, do you still have the KSM90 Parts List? If not, you can download a PDF version from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use KSM90P) and select one of the files that appear under Parts List. If you turn to page 6 you will find the exploded view of the motor and the speed control. I suspect your fussy selector issues are being caused by Illus Nos. 24, 25, or 27 (the Governor Assembly, the Control Plate Assembly or Phase Control Board, repsectively). I would order all three parts on the assumption that if one has gone bad, the others aren't far behind. As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order: RepairClinic.com; mendingshed.com; searspartsdirect.com; partstore.com. Prices for the same part may vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping.
Good Luck, I hope this is helpful. Howard, Burke, VA
