Press SHIFT then MODE then press either 6 to specify a fixed decimal notation or 8 to specify floating decimal notation.

You can always enter a number in scientific notation. Use the EE or the [x10^X] key to enter the exponent of 10. Whether it will remain in that form depends on the display mode you set the calculator into:SCI, ENG, NORM1, NORM2, FIX.
However if a result is too big or too small, it will always be represented in SCIentific format.

Press the f button then a digit specifying the number of digits you want after the decimal point. Be aware that numbers whose magnitude are too small or too large will always be shown in scientific notation so as to fit into the display.

Press 2nd [SCI] to switch the calculator to display all results in scientific notation. The results are the same whether you do it in scientific notation or not, it's just how the number is displayed.
