Output from the philips dvd player comes out black and white and grainy to the new samsung lcd i bought series 5, B550. If I use an older dvd player, it shows it in color.
Re: black and white grainy output to new samsung lcd
Your DVD player is using a PAL or NTSC variant which is not supported by your display. Somewhere hidden in the depths of the options in the DVD player should be an option to change the composite output type.

the philips DVD player output gives three wire RED,WHITE,YELLOW accrording to them connect the red & white wire to the TV's red&white wires which is responsible for audio output from the dvd player, then connect the yellow wire to the yellow inlet of the TV, which is either on the front pannel or back side of the television which is provides the video signal from the DVD.
Your DVD player's output is Composite Video (the yellow connector) plus stereo audio (the red and white connectors, for right and left audio)
The inputs on your TV are for Component Video, which splits the video signal into three cables (Y for brightness, Pb and Pr for blue and red, respectively)
Check your TV to see if it has a composite input (single yellow connector, labeled "video" or "composite")
2. If they are correct, take out movie, press Play/Stop at same time on the front of the unit (not remote) to reset any settings that may have been changed.
Ive got 3 samsung tv's (lcd, plasma, DLP) and I use HDMI cables on all of them. Its the only way to get the full potential out of the tv. When you use the red/white/yellow RCA cables the signal is anolog aka "old technology". Component cables are good but HDMI is the best. HDMI is a digital signal and thats what all the components that go with the tv should be run on. If your dvd player does not have an HDMI output I would suggest getting one that has that output. As for the cable box most require you to upgrade to digital cable in order to get one with an HDMI output. If you dont want to spend the money on new components and run what you have now the picture will stay mediocre at best. Good luck hope this helped
Offhand, your Philips 32PFL7422/98 do not have regular Audio Output RCA jacks (white and red), sorry. However, right before the antenna connector is an S/PDIF output connector. This should allow transfer of digital audio signals from the Philips 32PFL7422/98 to a S/PDIF capable receiver or amplifier. If you would look at the rear of your stereo and determine if it has such an input, then it would be a matter of getting the right cable/connector.
Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information. Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.
The DVD player may have multiple output formats that can be displayed. Sounds like you have the composite output selected when you have the component output selected on the DVD player. Check the menu options on the DVD player and confirm they match the way you have the player connected
Check if the recorder is set to output in 'S-Video' or 'SuperVideo' mode, if your TV doesn't understand S-Video you'll get a grainy B&W picture. The VCR should be set to output in PAL for the UK and most of Europe.

i work for the philips service agent in durban and have repaired a couple of these units.
i dont think that your lcd is cracked because this causes black patches on the screen, it is more likely you have a broken print somwhere.
