Hi, it's Allie from Crucial Vacuum!

Maintaining your belts is crucial to keep your unit working properly. Your unit's belts connect to the roller brush and makes the roller turn to collect any debris. After regular usage, belts will stretch our, lessening the tension on the roller brush. Less tension decreases the brush roller's turn rate and speed, what means you will probably see more debris left behind.

If you notice your unit's roller brush not spinning properly, experience loss of suction or notice more debris left behind after using your unit, your belts may need to be replaced. Belts are recommended to be replaced every 3 to 6 months.

You can purchase direct your replacement belts from Crucial Vacuum with free shipping and an exclusive 10% coupon for Fixya.com readers, use code: FIXYA10

Dyson dc17 making loud sound

It may have a bad clutch belt. When the belt on the clutch begins to slip it makes a terrible noise. If the noise is gone when the brush roll is off you will have to take it to a dealer.

The belt for the maain vaccume broke off and now with the new belt the roller will not work.

It sounds like your roller brush itself might be bad. Try holding the roller brush holding just the end caps with your finger tips, and spinning the roller. Does the roller spin freely? If no, this indicates that your roller brush's bearings have melted together. This is a common problem for Bissell vacuums, as they use cheaper plastic bearing caps. The roller brush is not covered under the warranty either.

When this part goes bad, this causes the belt to break almost immediately. If you tried replacing the belt, and it broke immediately, your roller brush has gone bad.

Suction Problem

Greetings from GoVacuum,

I believe what may have happened is that your vacuum cleaner belt has either broken, or been stretched so far that ithe brushes are no longer spinning fast enough.

Here's what you should do to diagnose this problem.

1. Take the suction hose out of the back of the vacuum (assuming that your vacuum has on-board tools), and see if you have any suction coming from the hose. If you do, this indicates your belt is bad.

2. If you don't have suction coming from the hose, then it may be something as simple as replacing the filters, to a clog in the vacuum, or to your motor going bad.

In my professional opinion though I would say from what you stated that the belt is mostly likely going to be your issue. If you can provide me the model number of your vacuum cleaner, I can walk you through step by step on ow to replace the belt.

I have posted a short YouTube video on a vacuum belt change, this is not for all vacuums, but it will give you some idea of how to change a belt;

Brush bar not spinning

Depending on the make and model the belt may be bad or if it has a clutch assembly then it has gone bad.

Eureka the Boss Smart Vac. Hose has suction, but still isn't picking up. Weird.

Your belt is probably broken. Check your belt and make sure your brushroll has not seized. If both of those check out ok, (because the smartvac belt doesn't stretch,) the belt tensioner assembly may have gone bad.

My vacuum does not have any suction, and it spits out dirt when I roll it backwards. It is an upright Hoover Elite

Trouble Shooting guide:

1. Check to make sure that your agitator still spins. (Agitator = brush). If your agitator does not spin, it could very well be a belt gone bad and means there will be no suction.

2. If belt is fine and agitator spin, your vacuum could be clogged. A clogged vacuum can be cleaned with a brush inserted into the hose of the vacuum to pull out the debris.

Electrolux Hi-light

Burnt smell is probably the belt slipping. Even though it looks OK, either the belt needs replacement and/or the roller needs cleaning and/or lubrication at the ends. Try cleaning the roller ends first and then light lubrication with WD40. If belt works, you are done. If not, replace belt.
