It just would not come back on and I only ad it for a little over a month I registered it on july 7th 2014 the day I got it in the mail, bought it online on the 2nd or the 3rd of this year being 2014, what is wrong it worked fine until last night went as many nights before I hooked up my 500gb hard drive to watch a movie, it read the hard drive and then went black and has not come back on sence, and that was around 8:15 to 8:30

I am not sure if this is a solution, but I am a Mac user and the drive stopped working on my Mac with Leopard (OS 10.5.5) but seems to work fine on Panter (0S 14.4.). I am not sure how to fix this problem, but when I went to an older computer with an older OS, the drive seems to work just fine lik it did... I can't remember if I updated my Firewire or not.

This may or may not help, but it worked for me! After about 4 hours of trying everything (Device Manager/Uninstall, Disk Management, etc..) nothing at all would work. The USB external hard drive would power up but when you plug it in, the New Found Hardware will pop up and search unsuccessfully for drivers for a PLUG AND PLAY external drive!?!?!
In any event, I simply plugged another USB drive into my laptop (and desktop) and viola! The new hard drive was recognized and installed immediately as 'plug and play' should do. I then unplugged the new drive and tried plugging in the one that was recognized and all of the sudden....IT WORKS AGAIN!!!!
This fix might not help anyone who doesn't have a second USB external drive, but you could try plugging another USB device in and get it to load and then unplug it and try your drive. It worked for me on my laptop and then I did the same thing to my desktop (which also wouldn't recognize it) and it worked on the desktop too! Problem solved for me, thank GOD!
Hopefully, this bypass can save you a few hours of google time and unwanted anguish. Like I said, you may not have another USB drive but try plugging in any other USB device until it loads and then unplug it and then plug in your USB drive that wasn't working. It worked perfectly for me.
Hope it helps!!!!

I devised these simple steps that tend to remedy quite a few issues with most USB portable / external hard drives and OTHER devices (though not always)
A few things to check but assumes USB and Windows for other interfaces / operating systems (mac/ Linux) similar steps may be adapted to suit.
1. Ensure it is connected directly to the computer to a USB 2.0 port not a USB 1.0 port as this can have effects on performance and reliability
2. Use only the cables that came with it NOT one that fits that may have been lying around or is longer. Not all USB cables are equal even though they should be)
3. Do not connect through an external USB HUB unless that hub is USB 2.0 AND has its own power supply.
4. Use ONLY the power supply that came with it if it has an external power supply Don’t use any other unless you know it has both the same voltage and current rating e.g. 12V 500mA anything rated below that would not work properly.
5. Always use the same port for connecting your devices. Some devices do not like being switched about. If switched they may want to install software / drivers again. This can be especially true if you move a HUB to another port
If you checked and fixed anything there and still have issues then check your hardware from CONTROL PANEL / SYSTEM / HARDWARE.
Any exclamation marks by hardware need fixing before you investigate any further
USB flash drives can fail for no apparent reason.
Sandisk Cruzers are especially bad for this.
USB hard drives should be treated with extreme care.
This is a real hard drive ! and knocks and bumps can quite literally kill them.
It is possible to remove drives from the enclosures in most cases and connect directly inside a PC to fully check it.
Note that if you hear a drive clicking or pinging this could be the worst thing you would hear.
Known as "The Click Of Death"
If none of the above steps help look at updating the drivers from the manufacturers web site in the support section.

Hi Evan
The fact that you have tried all three connectors suggests that the fault lies with the drive. Either the interface board or the HD itself. If you have access
to another computer you should be able to prove it one way or another.
Over the years I have seen many external drives fail (I had two identical drives of my own fail on consecutive days one proved to be the firewire board in the box, the other was the circuit board built into the HD), and it's quite difficult to decide where the fault lies.
Do you hear the HD spinning when it powers up (press your ear against the case)? You should be able to differentiate between the HD and the noise of the fan. Is there any clicking?
Is it still under warranty?
Thinking about it, if you get nothing with the USB and the Firewire then it's a good chance that the HD inside has failed.
