Enter BIOS Menu and look for Hard Disk SATA IDE setting of AHCI. Disable this by setting to Compatible mode.
XP does not support AHCI mode.

Make sure that there is no dust in the Fans of teh unit. The Compaq's are famous for overheats.

Download a program called SpeedFan available from

www.almico.com/speedfan.php

once you donwload the file install it, it will put the computer's temp in your system tray by the clock

Try and watch the temp and see what its at when the computer shuts down.

If it is an older unit your processor will most likley need to have heat paste applied to the processor.

You can call your local repair shop, some will do it for about 25.00... Make sure that when you use the machine that you provide enough room for the fans to breath, do not set the laptop on a couch, or bed where the heat cannot escape.

Also check to see that the fans on the bottom of the machine are running. they sometimes fail, however you should receive notification of this on the POST when your computer starts.
