Until you can get your bobbin winder repaired, I'd suggest picking up a bobbin winder at your local fabric store. The last time I noticed, they cost about $30. Many sewists prefer to use this little accessory inside of wearing out the bobbin winder on their sewing machine. Also, if you more than one thread cone, you can rewind bobbins without unthreading your sewing machine.

How do I fix my bobbin winder?

1. Take the top off.
2. Check to see if the bobbin winder has pressure as you move it back and forth. There should be. If not then check for a spring connected to the bobbin and reset it. There will be some kind of post to hook it to.
3. Place the bobbin winder in the "off" position and put the top lid back on.
4. Without putting the screws back in move the bobbin winder to the "on" position and to the "off" position.
5. There should be pressure either way you move the winder.
6. Loosen the hand wheel handle.
7 With the bobbin winder in the "go" position use your foot pedal to make sure it revolves.
8. Replace the top.

Getting the cover off my brother cs 80. all screws have been removed and the cover comes off partially. I seems to be stuck at the turn wheel, like something is holding it fixed.

I had the same problem when opening my machine. The problem is a screw underneath the bobbin winder area. Pull the bobbin base off and then gently pull up the bobbin winder assembly from under the front cover. You will see a screw in the corner to remove so that you can complete the task. I had to purchase a service manual and then I had great success with replacing the bobbin winder "tire" (Bobbin Winder Tire, Babylock, Brother #X55238051 at sewingpartsonline.com - $3.99!!)

Broken bobbin winder

For $29 at Hancock, Jo Ann's or Wal Mart you can get a thing called a Side Winder that will wind your bobbins without using the winder on your sewing machine. It has the additional advantage that you can wind while sewing. I use it even with machines that will wind bobbins.

How to fix bobbin winding

. Put the spring on the hole that the bobbin winder fits into. Now put the bobbin winder in, but don't tighten the screw- just turn it once or twice. Put the straight projection of the spring on the right side of the bobbin winder. Start to tighten the screw. Before you get the screw too tight, pull the downward projecting side of the spring over the housing of the machine so that it is pressing on the inside of the machine creating a push to the left. Center the circular part of the spring underneath the screw and the bobbin winder and tighten up.

Designer 1 bobbin assembly loose or broken. will not allow machine to function. trying to take cover off machine to remove bobbin assembly so I can use machine until I can get it to repair.

If the bobbin winder spindle is loose and flopping around in the opening in the front of the machine is has come out of the frame that it should be mounted in. Operating the machine with loose parts inside can be risky for the machine and the operator.
Don't take a chance on causing further damage to the machine. The bobbin winder can be replaced without too much trouble and is relatively inexpensive.
