My CFD-f10 showed "no disk" after not being used for a few months. Before that it began to stick or skip toward the end of the disk. The trouble was the drive mechanism was failing to move easily due to poor lubrication of the CD drive mechanism. It can be lubricated, but the job is difficult. The top must be opened. First unplug from 120 V and also remove all 6 D batteries, then take 7 screws out from the top. One is under the Tape lid. Two are under the CD lid. Four are along the back. Also take out the screw from the bottom that holds the antenna. There are little arrows next to those screws. Do not take out any more screws than those. Gently lift the top, which includes the CD and tape lids, from the rear while moving the top a little toward the rear. It will seem very tight at first. Do not force it, but keep gently prying. There are circuit boards close to the seam, so do not pry open with long tools. The rear will lift up about 1.5". The handle stays attached to the bottom. Then the flat ribbon cable must be pulled from the ivory socket. The ends of the cable stick into the socket. The socket remains on the circuit board. As the top is raised further, unplug the cables preventing movement, Carefully note where they are plugged in. After the top is opened about 90 degrees, leaving the tape drive still close to the bottom cabinet, remove the 4 CD drive attachment screws with metal washers at the colored rubber washers and also the cable. Now the CD drive can be removed. With very fine synthetic clock oil, I lubricated the end of the motor shaft, (lift the plastic cover a little by unclipping the little snaps.) Very gently operate the mechanism by pushing on the larger gears. Sony had lubricated most, but the lub must have gotten thick with age. Put a little synthetic oil wherever there are moving parts. By turning the gears by hand, you will tell if all is working freely. Then carefully put all back together. Yes the CFD-f10 now does play CDs again!!! I do not know for how long. (Sony style outlet online is selling the newer refurbished CFD-S350 silver boom boxes for about $37.00, which also uses the more desirable 6 "D" batteries, and comes with remote. I have one on order.) The synthetic clock oil can be obtained from any company selling jewery or clock parts, but it is quite expensive, easily half what the refurbished CFD-S350 costs.

Press record on the tape player.

Press play on the CD player.

The volume control or any audio emphasis buttons will not affect the record level.
