Canada eh? Greetings from Toronto. I removed your phone number, because this site gets 11 million views every year, and a small percentage will phone and try to scam you.
I believe the feature needs to be turned on my Bell Canada.
First, you've posted this is Nortel Phones, while your model is an NEC - you might have more luck posting in the NEC section.
When you do, it would help if you add more detail on which button (sp?) stays lit. If it's Call Forward, a second push should turn it off. If it's Message Waiting, you probably have to access voicemail.
The message waiting needs to be enabled on the PBX for that telephone. I hope this helps. If not please connect with me at: http://www.liveperson.com/nortel-guy/ for service and support.
more than likely someone in your office left the message rather than the voice mail. to clear it press the call soft key below the screen. the screen should display who left the message with two of the soft keys labeled call and erase. press the erase soft key. it's possible the the person/s that left the message left multiple messages. in that case repeat the procedure til all messages are canceled
There is this thing on Norstar systems called Reply message... this turns on your voicemail light, but there is on messages when you go into the mailbox.
Try this: FEATURE # 6 5 There might be something on you set that will tell you who sent the message, and you can hit the # or press the OK button to cancel this message!

The message was probably left manually by a co-worker and not the voice mail try entering feature 65 that should send you to who turned on the message light.when the station is called back the light should go out.
