THE PTO LEVER ON A 210 JOHN DEERE GARDEN TRACTOR HAS AN 1 3/4 INCH FREE PLAY WHEN IT IS ENGAGED. THE PLAY CAUSES THE MOVER BLAKES TO BOG DOWN AND SLIP UNLESS YOU BRING THE PTO LEVER BACK TO THE POSITION WHERE THERE IS TENSION ON IT. ONCE THE TENSION IS ON THE PTO LEVER, IT WORKS FINE. WHAT SHOULD I DO TO ELIMINATE THE FREE PLAY ON THE PTO LEVER?

This is the link to all the John Deer manuals for the 2140 tractor (and accessories). Unfortunately, when I posted this, the John Deere page was unavailable. If I still can't get it later, I will try somewhere else. Regards, Brian
There are 2 safety switches on that unit as well. Most of them are right below the steering column in the firewall area. Search that to see if that unit has them. I'd be willing to bet one of them is faulty. Most are just a push button type.
The tractor is not a 6300 is it.If it' not you need to adjust the cable for the p.t.o. until it will stay down.Don't turn the turnbuckle too much at a time because there is a fine line between the won't engage and the won,t disengage adjustment.
The PTO usually has a clutch that has to be engaged so that you can select the PTO rotation setting. I had a problem like that on my tractor and all it needed was a little adjustment on the PTO clutch lever, so it could disengage the PTO gearbox properly.
