If you can here sound in headphones, but not through the speakers, most likely the phone jack switch is bad. The whole jack needs replacement. Also, in some cases, it could be more then that, like Audio CODEC chip on motherboard is bad, but lets assume the best.

Get a detail list of each bit of harware and search the hardware manucfacture site of each driver EG your sound card is proberly STAC 92XX C-Major HD Audio and go to the google and you will xp driver http://ftp.us.dell.com/audio/R114282.EXE
