REAR WHEELS ARE LOCKED UP. I CANNOT GET THE HYDROSTATIC DRIVE TO UNLOCK IN ORDER TO ROLL THE MOWER AROUND. WHEN I RUN THE MOWER AND TRY TO DRIVE FORWARD OR REVERSE THE TRANSMISSION ? MAKES A BAD NOISE AND THE MOWER WILL NOT MOVE. I HAVE CHECKED THE FLUID IN DRIVE UNIT AND IT APPEARS TO BE FULL. I USED THE MOWER 3 WEEKS AGO WITH NO PROBLEMS. ?
In the back of the mower...probably under the seat, there should be a lever to release the transmission, or it is on the back plate. As far as the noise when trying to move drive the mower, the brake in the back, next to the transmission is jammed, use a 1/2 inch wrench to loosen it maybe 1/4 turn and this should unlock the brakes
I have the same problem and I move the lever to release the transmission and it is still not freewheeling. If the brake is jamed will keep the transimission from freewheeling?

I have a craftsman riding mower Model # 917.275661 with 20 hp motor. When mowing down hill the hydro trans looses forward movement and I can move the speed lever to a faster speed and it will pick back up and then can move it back to the desired operating speed. This problem doesn't occure mowing up hill. Can this be low fluid level and if so can the fluid be changed (I have read that the fluid used may not be auto trans fluid, such as type F)????
