MTD PRO RIDING MOWER/LAWN TRACTOR 18 HP ENGINE HYDROSTATIC DRIVE

REAR WHEELS ARE LOCKED UP. I CANNOT GET THE HYDROSTATIC DRIVE TO UNLOCK IN ORDER TO ROLL THE MOWER AROUND. WHEN I RUN THE MOWER AND TRY TO DRIVE FORWARD OR REVERSE THE TRANSMISSION ? MAKES A BAD NOISE AND THE MOWER WILL NOT MOVE. I HAVE CHECKED THE FLUID IN DRIVE UNIT AND IT APPEARS TO BE FULL. I USED THE MOWER 3 WEEKS AGO WITH NO PROBLEMS. ?

I have a craftsman riding mower Model # 917.275661 with 20 hp motor. When mowing down hill the hydro trans looses forward movement and I can move the speed lever to a faster speed and it will pick back up and then can move it back to the desired operating speed. This problem doesn't occure mowing up hill. Can this be low fluid level and if so can the fluid be changed (I have read that the fluid used may not be auto trans fluid, such as type F)????

In the back of the mower...probably under the seat, there should be a lever to release the transmission, or it is on the back plate. As far as the noise when trying to move drive the mower, the brake in the back, next to the transmission is jammed, use a 1/2 inch wrench to loosen it maybe 1/4 turn and this should unlock the brakes

Rear wheels are locked

Hydrostatic or not, whats your model #. If it is Hydrostatic, first! MAKE SURE YOU ARE ON FLAT GROUND before you pull the bypass lever on the transaxle. Check your manual, if not I have included a link that may help. http://www.husqvarna.com/ddoc/HUSO/HUSO2008_AAaa/HUSO2008_AAaa_YTH2246_532418529.pdf Check out page !!

My MTD riding mower is losing power to the rear wheels when pulling an incline. It will come to a complete stop. the engine RPM and blade rotaion do not seam effected. What am I over looking?

normally sign of a failing hydrostatic transmission. if your mower has one, start looking for a new one, mower that is as a new tranny will cost more than a new mower.

How to remove rear wheel of lawn tractor

You should be able to remove the bolt from the center with a 1/2" socket an slide it off the axle. You do not want to do any heavy hammering on the wheel because you could possibly drive the axle out of the transmission. MTD mowers are notorious for being hard to get the rear wheels off. If you do get them off or ever buy a new one, remove the rear wheels and coat the axles with anti-seize compound. Good luck
