It sounds like it would be a good time to take the sewing machine in for service and see if there is a timing problem.

your machine might have a problem with the rotary hook, it might need to get timed by a professional.

SOURCE: I have a necchi 4595, and well I cannot figure out

It's just in the front panel, where the drawing of all the built in stitches are, it's the drawing number eleven from the left, you'll see a zig zag (red) and a straight stitch (black) Select A group of stitches (knob with the arrow) and then select the eleventh stitch (same knob but use the dial, look the manual) and then select zero on your stitch width dial. Hope that helps :)

Make sure the presser foot is up when threading any sewing machine.

Can u do normal straight stiching with ovetlocker model 686 elna?

No. A serger is not made to do straight stitching. However, you can accomplish the look of straight stitching as long as it is on the edge of fabric. The serger trims fabric from the edge and encloses the raw edge with thread.

If you want straight stitching, you need a sewing machine. Go to a sewing machine repair shop and ask if they have an inexpensive old mechanical sewing machine...like an old Singer, White, Necchi, Kenmore--the old metal kind.

I bought a R-2000 never used Necchi at an estate sale. Did not thoroughly read the manual before beginning to sew. Now it will only sew a zig-zag--think I did not use the release knob before changi

since you bought the machine at a state sale it would probably be a good idea to have the machine serviced.
you should be able to go from straight stitch to zig zag with out any problems.
if you move the dials or knob & the machine will not do a straight stitch then it needs to be checked

Casn I use a double needle on this model?

If you have a zig-zag stitch on your machine, you have the capability of using a twin needle when using a STRAIGHT stitch. The width between the needles is the same as the width for the z-z stitch but you won't be using that stitch. Only the straight stitch.

Only does zig zag stitches, no straight stitches,

make sure the pattern selector is set for straight stitch first. If it is set correct then the machine may be "stuck" is zig zag mode. May need to be de greased and then re lubricated.
