JVC GR-FXM40EK is analog camcorder that can not be connected directly with computer because computer needs digital video format to save the file so connect USB 2.0 Video Capture Device in computer and plug camcorder AV wires in that device that will digitize the AV signals of analog camcorder and computer will save it in your selected folder on hard disk.

You should have a DV Cable 4-pin to 4-pin firewire (part number VC-VDV204U ) which came with your camera. It would not have firewire on one end and usb on the other. They are two seperate technologies. see http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-a-firewire-to-usb-adapter.htm

Take out the battery and clean the gold connectors. I had the same problem for months and finally I tried this and it worked perfectly afterward.
