The TV just says "disc error" or similar phrase no matter what kind of disc I use -- R, RW, etc.
If you can play original CDs then the problem is in neither the TV nor the DVD player , but in your DVD authoring software or your skills to use it (no offense meant).
Overall I seriously doubt the TV make and model is relevant here.
Depending on what exactly are you burning and how are you burning it the DVD player may be important as it may have certain limitations, e.g. codec formats supported or media types supported (e.g. DVD-R vs DVD+R etc.)
I can play commercial DVD's with no problem. I have tried both R and RW. I am usually trying to play DVD, on which I have burned photos from my "gallery"
As I said i think the TV model is irrelevant here and that's not where the problem is.
That leaves you with either the DVD player or the burning process. I'd say burn a CD (not a DVD) with pictures and see if that will go.

SOURCE: I just bought a new sanyo 46 inch tv and a
kbluhm,
First I would make absolutely sure that the connection cord is ok. If you have other cables I would try them first. If the unit still does not work I would hook a VHS machine or another DVD up and see if the TV works. If the TV has other inputs, video 2, video 3, etc I would advise trying them. If after eliminating the inputs and the DVD as the problem then I would take the TV back to the store and have them show you that the input works or does not. Obviously if you have a good cable, and a good DVD the unit should work.
Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.
