The printer would need all cartridges to have sufficient ink levels to continue printing - that's to prevent damaging the printhead. Every time a cartridge is replaced, all colors
are primed simultaneously thus the need for all cartridges to have ink.
To save on your ink investment, try printing in draft mode and by making sure that your printing preferences is set to print using black ink only.
Hi there!
If you haven`t used the printer in 2-3 months the black ink cartridge has gona dry.Wich means the printer is seeing full ink but the ink isn`t actually coming out from the ink head.Take a peace of clean cloth or cotton and clear the bottom part of the ink head(be verry carfully while cleaning it cuz you may dmg the head.If that doesn`t help just go and buy a new ink cartridge and it will solve your problem.
Try this procedure: 1. Open printer lid so cartridges move to center of carriage.
2. Lift clamp and remove black or color cartridge from the holder.
3. Place cartridge on table with copper contact strip facing you.
4. Carefully place a strip of clear plastic tape over the four contacts on the upper left corner of the cartridge.
5. Reinstall cartridge in printer and close lid. Wait until cartridge returns to parking position.
6. Open lid and remove cartridge again. Remove tape from left side and
place tape over four contacts at upper right corner of cartridge.
7. Reinstall cartridge in printer and close lid. Wait until cartridge returns to parking position again.
8. Open lid again, remove cartridge, remove tape.
9. Reinstall cartridge and close lid.
Printer will now recalibrate. Once the process is complete the ink level meter should be reading full again.
I hope this helps, if so please rate our solution.
check the print settings by going to printing preferences and check if the grayscale or black and white is the one that is selected change it to color also make sure that the color cartridge is properly snapped inside. try printing a test page and see if all colors come on the printed page
Try cleaning the gold contacts on cart first, with distilled water. Let dry and try again. If not, try this one 1.Try placing sheet of black text on copy board, and run many copies black only. I ran 25x12 times still no black. Run head clean after about each 50 sheets. Persevered and finally BLACK ink OK

Backup mode means printing with one cartridge. If the printer tells you "cartridge failed", it probably doesn't recognize it. You can try removing it from the printer and gently wipe the electric contacts on the cartridge with a dry cloth. Turn the printer off, turn it back on and reinsert the cartridge. If the message is still there, I suggest you buy a new color cartridge. You can also go to the store where you refilled your cartridges and ask for their opinion, they may be able to help too.
you need to print only in black if that is all the ink you have, and also you need to remove the color cartridge as it still registers in the printer as able to be used, although it is empty or near so. Did you remove the tape over the print head fron the new ink cartridge? Do a print head alignment, or use the toolbox icon to tell the printer that you just replaced the cartridge. Some HP models chip the ink cartridges so even a refill wont register as a full tank and the printer wont print. chip needs to be reset (difficult) or just replaced with a new cartridge.
Your cartridge is dried out or one color is empty. You may be able to take some alchol and swab over the end of it to loosen up the dried ink but you will probably have to buy a new cartridge.
