When I first bought it, the center channel worked. I now want to connect just my Vizio TV input via digital optical line, then out to 5 speakers. The side speakers work, but now the center channel is "unavailable?" Could it be a fuse? Does it have fuses? There is no mention of fuses in the manual (which is not the greatest manual I've ever seen.)
It may be the surround mode you are in. Some modes do not use the center channel. Try changing to a pro logic mode, these will almost always use the center
It is unavailable in ALL modes. That's why I suspected a fuse. But I don't want to risk opening the thing up if there aren't any fuses.
there are no fuses that would cause a problem like that. I would say to try and do a factory reset on the unit to make sure it is not just a settings being wrong.
You can reset it by holding the VIDEO 1 button and pressing power. CLEAR should show up in the display. After that, all settings are back to the way it comes from the factory.
I will try that this evening. Thanks!
Did NOT help. It did reset but I still don't have the center channel available. May have to bite the bullet and buy a new receiver. Dang.
Here's another thought....it states in the manual that if speaker set B is turned on, then speaker set A is stepped down to 2.1 only. Do you have front B speakers turned on? The unit probably only has 5 amps channels, and if B is on, then it is using the surround amps in order to drive it.

SOURCE: Onkyo TX-SR304S 5.1- Popping Issue
I called Onkyo support regarding the issue with the clicking/popping noise and they said that that's normal when you change channels that are digital. They don't seem to think that it's a defect.

What I think I did and how I fixed it!
FACTORY RESET ON EVERYTHING!
All you have to do is to do a factory reset on everything, but I thing mostly on your 605, but I would do it on the TV as well. I think what had happened is after I set everything up for the first time, it worked great. As the days when on I started to play with all of the futures the 605 and the TV had to offer. I was turning them on and off to see what everything did. What I think I did was, I turned on something in the 605 that the TV did not know how to cope with. If I had to guess, I think it is the Lip-sink feature (Spelling?) in the 605.
Anyway disconnect everything, look in your manuals of the TV and the 605 to see how to do the factory reset on both. Then turn your TV on. After it does it’s start up for the first time (again), start connecting the 605.
It has been working great for me after I did this. Do not count on help from the people you bought it from or the people who made it. This stuff is so new they do not really know how to fix it.

SOURCE: hdmi or optical
There are no noticable differences between HDMI and optical except price. Although optical is less prone to EFM interference, HDMI can carry a wider bandwidth, depending on quality, but cost a lot especially long runs (10 ft or more). Also optical cables are not prone to connector tarnish which occurs even with gold pins of HDMI
SOURCE: Switching digital inputs with a remote?
The default assignments for the digital INPUTs to Source names are:
OPT1= Video2
OPT2= CD.
If you have never changed them you should be able to select the PS3 by choosing Video2 and the 360 by choosing CD.
Or you could go into the setup routine on Page 33 of the manual and assign each digital input to a different 'function' that works better for you.
By the way, if you have the choice of coaxial vs optical cables on a given device the cheaper, longer and least sensitive-to-dirt-and-damage choice is coaxial - plain RCA cables. You can even extend them with Male-Female extender cables or split them with Y-cables for sharing one port with two devices or one device feeding two other devices (example: Cable Box-to-TV-and-Receiver). Just don't have two sources feeding one input turned on at the same time or they'll interfere with each other. Try that with optical cables.
Testimonial: "wicked late response, but this was just the help i needed. my receiver has been setup accurately for months. thanks!"
SOURCE: Onkyo TX-SR606 getting no sound from HDMI sources
Not sure if this is your fix, but I had what I thought was the same problem. I played with my Onkyo quite a bit ensuring the correct assignments for HDMI, audio and all that stuff. Turns out I neglected to make sure the output devices were properly assigned. Many devices aren't default to output sound over HDMI. I changed the audio out settings on the cable box to HDMI and suddenly the Onkyo worked great. I know, I'm an idiot for not checking that in the first place, but maybe someone out there is having the same trouble as well.
