I own a pentax espio 140 M and the zoom lens does not retract. When I try closing it I get the LE message and it clicks as if trying to close but does not work. Any suggestions?
Same problem ie. tried to zoom. Once zoom went to maximum extension, a 'HI' message appeared, and cannot switch off or retract. Remove/replaciing battery doesnt help.Same problem ie. tried to zoom. Have you tried spraying a can of compressed air into the lens assembly? All it takes is small piece of debris like a grain of sand to jam up the assembly.
Since the screen went black BEFORE the lens retracted, it makes me think this is a main board problem. The only other possibility is that it is the lens assembly, but since it went black BEFORE the lens retracted, I don't think that is it. I can replace the main board for $40, or you can send it to pentax in Arizona, and they will do it for about $90.
The main board is NOT something that I would suggest anyone try to replace as a DIY project. There are too many small screws, and delicate connections to deal with.

If you just want to sell the camera as-is, I also buy all pentax a10, a20, a30, a40 cameras, in any condition.
You could try to gently pull the lens straight. If it's leaning to the right then pull the lens to the left. Don't use brute force but it's possible to realign the lens this way. If it works you'll hear a click and the lens will look straight. Switch on and see if it retracts. I'd only use this as a last resort because you can cause additional damage if it's overdone. It has sood success rate also
This is not a common error on canon digital. This is caused due to possible short in zoom control circuit (main pcb). At normal use, if the lens does not retract due to mechanical jam, when the zoom control button is pressed, lens error 18 message supposed to be displayed. Since control circuit is shorted and faulty, error 18 message was not displayed. The remedy for this problem probably requires a replacement of a main pcb. Replacing a main circuit board may run around $100-140. -James
subaru662,
can you see the lens in the finder move when you zoom out? if not ,the finder lens is stuck.
if it does move when zooming, see if you have a diopter adjustment wheel or sliding knob near the front lens of the finder. if so adjust the lens to your eye.
You can try removing the battery and leaving out overnight then putting it back and charging it up then try the power. This has worked for some people but not all.
