Would appreciate any advice on connecting cable etc. to connect my Compter and TV to display video/film downloads.s

If you want to use a TV as a secondary or mirrored monitor. All you would need is a Mini-DVI to HDMI adapter. Use the adapter to connect an HDMI cable between your computer and the TV. If you have one of the newer macbook pros you need a Mini Display port to HDMI adapter.

I would try an s-video connection from computer to tv, it just might bypass all that copy right stuff that may be giving you problems

Yes, you can do this. Firewire is not necessary. That is for connecting your hard-drives should you want to do it through your display.

I suspect that the TV can't read the signal from the computer on the HDMI port. You would get a signal from a VGA connection. (Computers send a slightly different signal over HDMI than a DVD or blu-ray player.)

In general, when connecting a TV to a computer, turn off both devices before connecting the video cables. Then turn on the TV and set it to the source (with the no signal message). Then turn on the computer. Next set the computer to output the video on the external video port. (Depending on the laptop, you may need to enable the port in the BIOS. To access the BIOS, press Esc, F1, F2 or F10 repeatedly as you turn on the computer. The key depends on the brand of computer.) Next set the video output in the OS (depends on the OS). For Windows 7, right click on the desktop (anywhere there are no icons or running programs), select Graphics Properties and set the desired monitor choice (laptop monitor, external monitor, both or extended). Click Apply and then confirm this when the display changes. (At least this works for my HP laptop on the VGA port.; my desktop lets me change monitors under Screen Resolution.)

The output from the blu-ray is probably component video, where the brightness, blue and red difference signals are the three outputs. Sounds like the TV only has composite video input so won't work. Check the manuals, if you can get a composite signal from the blu-ray then your TV will display it but not high definition. A HD LCD or plasma TV is needed to show the blu-ray films in high definition.

There is no RGB connector input at the rear of your RCA tv. There is Video, Audio-L, Audio-R and S-video inputs. You won't get any response from your TV, if you connect the RGB connector to the above said audio video connections. You can connect the Blu-ray player with S-Video connector. After connecting it with specific S-Video cable to your TVs S-Video input and Blu-ray players' S-video output, assaign the input of your TV to S-Video, by going to its Menu, and sufing through it. OK.

you need a mini to two rca plugs cable; once you have this: connect the red rca plug to the left TV stereo rca connector and, the white rca plug to the right TV stereo connector
and, the mini stereo plug to your speaker jack on the macbook You will now have sound.
then: connect the video to you macbook using another either s-video or, vga cable to the TV

check if the cable came loose one any end

Later MacBook (Pro) use a mini-DVI connector that does not pass analog needed for composite or S-video. Was yours ever working? And most DVI connectors do not pass sound as seen by your cabling. You cannot detect display through RCA. You just set it in Sys Prefs :: Displays, try some other settings, although your seem right.
I have a white early-2009 MacBook and mini-DVI to HDMI adapter (monoprice <$10) and HDMI cable and have not connected the TOS-link for sound, yet--just slideshows at 1920x1080. You will get a much better picture digitally. -Ken
