You Just Responded to my STR-DG820 Issue..........

Simply power up unit without any speaker attached and see, does it go to protect mode?
If unit powered up properly then cause of problem is speaker / speakers or its connecting wries.

I plugged in my unit with no speakers attached and still received the PROTECTOR messages..could this be an internal problem with the receiver? Should I return this brand new receiver and get another one?

Do you have a recommendation for speakers? I was using my speakers from my Sony 5.1 system, but I need additional speakers for the 7.1

  • kelrhon Jan 02, 2009

Its internal problem of receiver and as you said, its brand new so it would have warranty cover. Simply return it and get replacement. I have all tech info including schematics of this particular model and can guide you to resolve this problem but I receommend to askSony for warranty replacement.

Speaker power rating should be minimum 110 Watt and speaker size is your choice.

I was listening to my sony STR-DG820 wath my PS3 and it just SHUT OFF. Now it will not turn back, but you can hear it switch on just know standby light or power? What happened?

You probably overloaded it.

Generally speaking, an amp protects itself from heat, shorts, overloads and operator exuberance by refusing to turn on or stay on.

Overloads can be from excessive periods of high output or marginally low impedance loading by the speakers; and shorts would be wiring issues or a speaker blowing up.

You should be able to feel if it's hot. WHY is it overheating? Make sure it has sufficient ventilation on all sides and that vent holes are not blocked by dust balls. Ensure the fan (if equipped) is running as designed (some only operate on demand). Clean dust and debris from it.

If the amp comes back on after cooling, you're lucky. They only have so many self-protection cycles in their lives so continuously resetting or cycling their power without addressing the cause can do more harm than good.

If it protects immediately on a cool power up you should disconnect the speaker connections and try it 'naked'. If it comes up then diagnose which lead(s) are shorted. If it does not come up the problem is internal and should be left to an experienced and competent hands-on tech.

Check for loose speaker connections at the speaker as a root cause for intermittent shutdown.

I have a str dg820 only about 2 months old. Recently went to power up and I get PROTECTOR message and it shuts down. I checked all speaker connections and they appear to be fine. It worked well for two...

Try disconnecting everything (all inputs, outputs and speakers, make sure there is no cable plugged into your unit except the power cord), turn it on, if it still shows the protect message, you have an internal short or a burnt out component inside the unit, possibly a desoldered contact on one of the connectors which generates internal noise of such intensity that it sends the unit into the protect mode.

If, after trying the above mentioned, there's no message, some other possibilities are:

- a bad speaker or speaker cable
- a bad signal interconnection cable
- a fault in any of the other units connected to your reciever/amplifier

Hope you cand find something out...

Good luck

When iturn on my Sony STR-DE325 it goes into protect mode

Try disconnecting all of your speakers, and then turn on you unit. If you have a defective speaker, or a short in your wires, your unit will go into protect mode. If your unit seems ok with the speakers disconnected, then turn unit off, hook up one of the speaker leads and try it. This way you can isolate the problem.......

Good Luck,

Eric

Stuck in protect mode

Protet mode is a special diagnostic mode that starts when a fault is detected.

When in protection mode the unit is prevented from starting by protection circuit, so to prevent further damage.

Check the speakers and speakers wiring, a contact in speaker wires, or faulty speakers can send the unit in protection.

Try unplugging power cable for one hour or so. then connect cable back and see if you get rid of protect state. Sometimes accumulation of electrostatic charges inside circuit capacitors can kick in protect mode. In that case unplugging the unit from main for some times can get rid of electrostatic charges, and reset circuits by draining power completely.
If that was the problem, you will not get Protect when plugging back power cable.

If you do all the above and still get Protect, then there is a real fault.

In that case the unit may be disassembled and tested to find the fault.

If that is the case I suggest contacting the manufacturer at the number listed on the owners manual, or asking a quote on repair to a local technician.

My reciever turns itself off

You most likey have a wire short on your center or rear surround speakers. The wire short will be between the + and - points of the speaker wire.

To find the problem speaker, disconnect one of the 3 speakers at a time from the back of the sony and see if the problem goes away. Once you identified the offending speaker, check both the sony side and speaker side for the short. The small wire strands are hard to see and it only takes one to trip the protection mode, so look carefully.

Sony-DG820 Subwoofer

The powered subwoofer should be connected to the black subwoofer output near the bottom of the receiver in just about the center. A subwoofer uses line level signals and has its own amplifier, Good chance that you wiped out a channel. Put the wiring back the way it was, and IF the channel was not directly connected to the speaker terminals, MAYBE, JUST MAYBE it will still work.
Chances are slim...
