My sony 3lcd vpl-es4 shutting itself off after just few minutes

Problem might be due to the air filters being blocked.
Remove the cover and check for dust accumulated on air filters. Remove the dust with a small paint brush.

How to rest lamp timer vpl-es4 - reset < > enter - doesn't seem to work

That's the link, to reset this unit, it seems you must hook, up with an RS232C cable, and "Talk" th the Projector, You simply hook up, using any terminal Program. such as, Hyperterminal. I think you need to get a manual.

I looked but could only find, pay for links, for the service manual. You really need this if you own anything it is worth any money, as in it is the information, the the engineers that service them, use to troubleshoot and fix, special codes, and settings the lot. So it is a must have.

To reset the lamp timer:
1) With the projector plugged in and turned off, press the 'ON/STANDBY' button to put the projector in 'STANDBY' mode. NOTE: You have to press the button on the projector itself, you cannot use the remote for this step (this is not clear in manual).
2) Now, using the remote, press the following keys in order: RESET, <--, -->, ENTER.
3) Timer should now read '0'.
