GE profile 989 cooktop with cracked top

Have a 30'' smoothtop downdraft electric cooktop with a cracked top- called the GE appilcance and parts place- they said this piece of glass was going to be over $900- you can get a new one for about $1100! Any idea where I can get one for a reasonable cost? or is there a glass repair kit?

    I also have a cracked cooktop. Is it OK to just ignore it?

    Can I just keep using it the way it is? The crack goes across the burner area.

GE Profile cooktop JP360. Trying to remove cooktop to install new granite countertops. Also have GE built in oven JTP 15 below. Called G.E. Customer Service today and was told to just pry the top off...
Hi marilynmcdon,

You can do it yourself. These cook tops are not glued to the granite at all (Or is not supposed to be). Simply lift is up slowly, start from the side, and lift it slowly. If done carefully you won't damage anything.

Yes the glass is replaceable, you will have to order a new one, and you could do so through an appliance parts store. They can even put it in for you.

Jp 989 switch replacement
not timely but no.
i have a dead switch, had to unhook it cause it kept tripping the breaker. 3 out of 4 work now.

Glass top
The cooktop will need to be removed from the counter. Turn it upside down and remove the screws. The biggest problem will be removing the cooktop from the counter. Sometimes it is not worth fixing as the part could cost around $400. NEVER use a cracked top as it could suddenly explode. This is tempered glass and very unstable if cracked or chipped.

No. If it is really important order the grates and downdraft cover as replacement parts. This will be expensive probably around $200 - $300.
