Hi I am wanting to confirm that the above CPU - AMD Athlon 3200+ 333MHZ - is compatible with an ASUS A7S8X-MX motherboard? I am keen to upgrade the CPU in my system and this seems the fastest 333MHZ Socket A processor; are there any other pitfalls I should be aware of? Eg what sort of BIOS upgrade would I need? Thanks for any thoughts or advice!
Yes it will work just fine. Just download and update your Bios to the latest version which is the 1007 release and you should be good to go. You can get the latest Bios here:

Hello itsme99, click on this link I have posted. This link shows what CPU you're Asus P5VD2-MX SE motherboard can run.

You're board does not support Quad core CPU's!
This next link is the main page (Drivers, FAQ's ect.) for the Asus P5VD2-MX SE motherboard. (Look to the left of the page under Related Link). http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=P5VD2-MX%20SE&SLanguage=en-us
Here is a list of Asus Quad core motherboards.

SOURCE: Fastest socket A processor?
i think you will find that you are in fact using the fastest speed processor for the socket 'A' type of motherboard as AMD has changed to socket 754 or 939 for dual core processors. You can clock the speed a little in the bios, if you go to the peocessor section in the bios and look at the clock speed probably set at 133MHZ you can move it up 1 increment at a time, eg 134MHZ and keep trying until the pc wont boot up, at which point you will have to reset the cmos settings JBAT1 terminal and then set it again to the fastest you got it to before it wouldnt boot.

Look for socket A processors and ignore the XXXX+ and focus on the XXXXMHz rating (the MoBo's manufacturer's support site will give you the max processor your Board will handle). Since you mention that your MoBo is 4 to 5 years old, you'll probably better serve yourself to replace the MoBo and processor (you'll be able to upgrade to a much better/faster processor by upgrading both, and shouldn't cost that much more), and probably be happier with the result. You may want/need to upgrade your Power supply while you are at it too.
