Have a Sony Laptop VGNFE31M and need to locate and replace the Cmos battery. Time and date change and stop everytime I shut down.
Please help.
Many thanks
It should be located somewhere on the motherboard wich means pulling the computer completely apart which unless you know what you are doing may be a little difficult for some, but not inpossible.

Go to the device manager (through the control panel) and uninstall the drivers. Get new drivers through Sony Vaio support and see if this resolves the issue.
Remove the battery, remove the power cord and start taking the laptop apart. You will need to remove the CMOS battery located on the motherboard and let it sit for an hour or two. Then but it all back together. The CMOS battery is a silver battery about the size of a nickel.
Every motherboard that runs a computer has a backup battery to run the circuit while turned off. This battery runs the real-time clock (RTC) and is referred to as the CMOS battery. By keeping the clock active and running even when the computer is switched off, power up/down cycles can be logged and before the internet, your computer could keep dates accurately. It also serves to maintain the system configuration settings in BIOS memory based on RAM or FLASH RAM.
If the time is not keeping up then it would seem that you will need to change your CMOS battery, this is a small battery found on the motherboard responsible for clocking etc
The battery is cheap to purchase, however I do highly recommned the laptop be booked into a reputable PC shop for replacement as you will need to take the whole laptop apart to get the motherboard
I have set the password for administrator when i entered the bios set up. you can change its setting but not the configuration unless you've entered the password. you can't change the password with a new one if you cant enter the old password. Next time dont forget your password because laptops has its security even when stolen you cant open its bios set up if its protected by password. CMOS battery is in the mother board. You need a service technician to open your laptop to reset the bios setup battery.
You must enter the laptop internally that is. In some laptops it is soldered to the motherboard be prepared to find that. Did you know it takes a long time for the battery to be stuffed because. Are you certain that the problem is the battery?. If it is stuffed your bios would have resetted itself to the default settings and will not hold your settings.
