GE Model WHDSR209D2WW makes unbearable loud metal Screeching noise

Hi, Yesterday I purchased a GE washer/dryer from a craigslist for $300. I made a big mistake by not checking whether washer was working correctly or not because the seller did dmo the dryer and asked me whether I wanted to check washer or not. I trusted her and hauled the washer/dryer to my home. spend another $50 on u-haul when I started the washer, after the water was filled to its level, there was unbearable metal screeching sound during the wash process. it looks like the rotor is getting rubbed with some metal surface. If I move the knob at rinse/spin position it drains all the water and spins perfectly. that cycle works fine. the major problem is during the wash cycle where it makes horrendus sounds. I dont know whether the seller cheated me or it was damaged during the move. lesson learned.."Dont trust anybody".. Any help or advice will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

    Hello Catriver.

Sincerely appreciate your advice and quick reply. I will work this weekend. Also today I noticed that when the tub is filled with water, it gets heavy and touches the bottom panel of machine making loud noise. and when I drain the water, it gets lighter and gets back to normal position and spins correctly without any noise. is anything broken which can be fixed? Thanks

    Hello Catriver,

Thanks a lot for your suggestion. The motor housing indeed was rubbing the bottom panel. I adjusted the front wheels so that the tub was elevated slightly and then it wont brush the bottom panel. Its now working properly.
You saved my certain $50-$100 . Thanks once again catriver.Bye

    Regards

Similar problem. During the wash cycle, it sounds like a child jumping on an old bed with the springs creaking over and over. Very loud and annoying. Any help would be appreciated.

Ppr78, couple of things you want to check. The bottom panel on these GE's are pretty flimsy. I have run into a couple where during agitation the bottom of the motor housing would rub against the bottom panel making a terrible noise. You need to remove the front panel by pusing on the clips on the left and right side just under the top. The front panel will pull out. During agitation, take your foot and push down on the bottom panel and see if the screech goes away. I have also found the suspension rod support sockets at the top dry out and make a screeching noise. You also want to check your belt and pully and see if the noise is from there. Check these things first...Catriver..post back.

Thanks catriver! That fixed it! I used some WD40 on the suspension joints.

Loud noise when the dryer turns on

Well, sir, it is metal on metal, and you did well to stop it. Someone will be needing to take the whole thing apart and find the problem. It may be easy because the metal should show where it was rubbing because it will be shiny bright.
Be blessed.

GE 5 Cycle Automatic Heavy Duty Extra Large loud noise

All ge dryers have a center bearing on the back side of the drum and drum glides on the frontside. The glides make a scrubbing sound when bad and the drum is hard to turn. The rear bearing does a squeak thang when the plastic bearing wears thin and begins to make metal to metal contact between drum mount and rear bulkhead mount. It is an easy fix but the drum gotta come out. here is my pictorial page that shows how with videos and repair pix:

Very loud metal on metal screeching noise maytag model LDE8414ACE

Warning! To avoid personal injury or even death, always disconnect your appliance from its power source--that is, unplug it or break the connection at the circuit breaker or fuse box--before you do any troubleshooting or repair work on your appliance. Also, because some components may have sharp edges, use caution while working on your appliance.

Loud metal-metal "screeching" sounds will eminate from the front bearing glides, (click on link below), for a picture of the glides. Link provided by www.repairclinic.com, they provide repair parts, disassembly procedures and diagrams.
You may also want to inspect for foreign objects in the front and rear drum seals and in the blower.
Drum rollers may sometimes cause loud noises also.
