No! Disabling the different devices - one by one- does not help. So I have enabled them all again. Perhaps the usb-ports are not activated for startup, although I can read and use the content of the usb sticks or external drives.

USB boot pops up in the boot options when you hit enter on hard drive

if in the bios, the drive category has a + side, it must be expanded by pressing enter. If the USB stick appears, it must be listed before the hard disk. To do this, use F5 and F6

and last, for legacy, machines, (thesis)
how to boot to uSb but Phoenix cME first BIOS Pro Setup Utility, wont let you.!

read this, (a super pain it is)or just tedious.
(lacking DVD drive that holds, w7 installer)
you never said if the original OS was dead
nor what it is/was? XP? /vista?

    way1:
if XP/vista runs, then insert the w7 USB stick
and click setup.exe on said stick,.

way2.upgrade the bios so it can do usb boots.
oops this method is long long gone now, for 15years. (you be way to late here....!!!)

    way3:
using a CD disk; (this is very tricky but works)
    https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16822/bo...

    way 4: (w7 is 3.3 GIGABYTES large)
W7 does not fit on any CD made, ever.
    s0....
Buy a DVD drive upgrade for this relic PC. (not easy to find and chose) then
burn the W7 ISO to the DVD using any DVD burner.
do so using RUFUS (free) or microsoft free burner app. at microsoft dot com.

    way5: (force feed way)
this is a very very tricky way, I will not tell you all steps, as you will get lost.
and is not authorized by MS.com.
Short as possible to say , below.
We have 2 machines here, 2 PC.
your dead PC and the donor or Test PC.
find a good test PC, any PC that uses the same HDD drive type as yours does. (IDE{PATA} or SATA)
this old dog PC is PATA, and most other PCs no longer have PATA ports, making this a pain to do. (I can but I have adapters to do this)
Remove the 100GB hdd (pata) from the old PC
    Remove the test machines HDD.
if test machine is SATA you need and adaptor.
    ask.
connect the old HDD to the test machine.
have no other hDD in the test machine now.
    if present unplug them.

then insert, w7 usb, and boot to USB using
the hot key stated in the test PCs manual.
on HP its F9 hot key.
now install w7, (end to end ,means many boot cycle as all installs do...)
    done.
now remove the old machines HDD from test PC.
and put this HDD back in the zd8000 dog PC.
boot the HDD, in this PC.
    w7 runs now.
and will be very angry. (fear not)
if will try to find missing drivers max.

in most cases if you are skilled and get
the WAN working, ETHERNET CABLE connected to a router, then the new PC HDD will find said drivers at microsoft servers. and things start working.... inch by inch.
next if you can down load all all drivers from HP, for this PC, oops they are now gone
the PC is too old for HP to support it.

we can in many cases find each missing driver by the hard way. ask.
in some cases the chips how have inside a super old PC like there never once had a w7 driver, ever.
I can list 100s of examples but I STOP HERE.

Better way 6? (captain obvious sorry)
buy a newer PC, 2010 or newer,
    that runs w10-64 and WIN.
    spend over $20

this post is not to just you but all folks
trying to do the impossible. (near or at)

  • Anonymous Jun 12, 2018

    I forgot to say
I do full HDD tests on any hdd before loading ANY OS, or the load will fail. facts of life.
I run full SMART tests on it,(crystaldiskinfo)
never seen a good 15 year old HDD yet.
1/2 working sure, but not fully. (fail you will)
for sure on crummy laptop HDD.
there are far better choices. like SSD.

Booting from USB is possible, as Edgar Reapolov said:
connect the usb to the notebook, reboot and enter the bios by pressing F5
In the boot order, in the drive category, the usb stick must be before the disk. To change the priority, use the F5 / F6 keys.
It is not possible to choose the USB stick during boot even if a + appears in the drive category (the bios recognizes that there are multiple disks). Pressing enter you can only say to start from disk, but which disk should be started must be set by bios

Windows not booting up

Your laptop got stolen. It came back with win7.
You want win8. .
You should not be inserting a winXp disk into it..
Presuming thus winXp disc is a recovery disk?

Your laptop may have the ability to boot into safe mode and then give you the chance to download a win8 installation via the Web. Try hitting the Esc key repeatedly to bring up the boot menu options of your HP-2000 laptop. If that doesn't work, try the same thing with the F11 key instead..

Failing that..
Pending on the type of win7 installation presently on the laptop, you should be able to create a recovery disk via win7 itself, but that will get u back into win7 and that is not an OS that you're licensed to have so you may be in trouble if you go that route.

The easiest way to get back to win8 may be to get a win8 installation onto a USB drive and then boot from that. You would Obviously need the assistance of someone with a laptop/pc capable of getting you such a download.. and you will also need your license key for win8 for this.

The other option, pending on the age of your laptop and where you purchased it from, would be to either go to the shop where you bought it or a local pc repair place and request a fresh install of win8.

HP 520 Notebook. Shuts down before installing new OS.

I agree a clean install is always the better, fresh start J
OK it sounds like missing drivers, what you have to do is create a new installation CD that will load the drivers for your laptop as it boots. I haven’t try this method with windows 7, but I know it works well with Windows XP. Try and create a new Windows XP CD with the drivers see: http://unattended.msfn.org/unattended.xp/view/web/35/
The start a new installation with this Windows XP CD and reformat you computer, after that you can do a new upgrade to windows 7

This should re-install the drivers, before you re-install remove any old drivers, the driver that should be in your add or remove
