There are two causes, the inverter board, " just under the LCD screen" more likely, or the backlight behind the display, "less likely"

If the backlight has failed or a cable is loose you can replace or repair the backlight of the monitor.

I suppose the keycombination FN and arrow up or down has no effect?

Try resetting the laptop to default settings in the BIOS. If that don't work, sounds like there's a problem with the backlight in the LCD Display.
Most laptops come with Ambient Light Sensors, that can adjust the display based on the lighting in the room.

This is such a user error. I had the same problem on my 3100-1718. It was as simple as holding down the Fn key and using the left and right arrow keys to change the brightness... I am a goofball for ever letting this stay dark for a month !

Dim screen acer 5100-3019

Try going into power option settings and taking the brightness to the max there. Start, control panel, power options, then you should see a setting for battery and for plugin. Hope this helps.

At bios post, the screen is green and text barely readable. The display is all green and pink, low res after booting XP. I don't think it is a driver problem b/c of the post screen being messed up. Is...

it seems like a VGA failure, try to connect an external monior to see if this still happens, if still happens its the VGA card for sure.

The following applies to Acer Laptops...

If the power indicator is lit but nothing appears on the screen - The computer's power management system automatically blanks the screen to save power. Press any key to turn the display on.
If pressing any key does not turn the display back on, check the following....
1. The brightness level might be too low. Press Fn and the right cursor key to increase brightness level
2. Display device might be set to an external monitor. Press Fn and F5 to toggle to the internal display
3. Backlight might be turned off. Press Fn and F6 to turn on the backlight.
4. If the Sleep indicator is lit, the computer is in Sleep mode. Press & release power button to resume.

The following instructions are from the Acer Aspire 5315 user's guide (page 35):

The computer's power management system automatically blanks the screen to save power. Press any key to turn the display back on, three hings might be the cause:

*The brightness level might be too low. Press <Fn>+<right-arrow key> (Increase) to adjust the brightness level.

*The display device might be set to an external monitor. Press the display toggle hotkey <Fn>+<F5> to toggle the display back to the computer

*If the sleep indicator is lit, the computer is in sleep mode. Press and release the power button to resume.

I am also user of Acer Aspire laptop. When you on your system after 3 min just press FN+F6. I hope you will see your screen ON. IF not thats mean your monitor not working proper may be display problem. Just visit Acer serviec center. Thx

Hi.

Have you tried adjusting the Brightness of the Display? May seem like a stupid thing to ask, but some laptops come with what is known as Ambient Light Sensors and by setting a higher brightness level it Disables the Ambient Light Sensor kicking in.
