You may not be able to load the XP disks - because the unit was manufactured after XP and drivers/controllers may not be available. You can try to boot in SAFE MODE, but finding the drivers that were never written for that model could be a 'needle in a haystack' to locate that works to display or address items in the main system.

SOURCE: O S disc, Toshiba L35-S1054

No unfortunately XP home and XP media edition are different but not completely. The only difference is the entertainment factor like TV control and live recording and pausing , viewing photos etc and media center is considered to be a bit more secure than XP home but i find this just a wrong perception of people as i also have XP home and also had media center, makes no difference at all regarding security but yes if u want much more features or facilities as far as entertainment is considered media center edition is far more good than XP home.......
IF U INSTALL XP HOME THAT DOES NOT MEAN U INSTALLED XP MEDIA CENTER
Now there are 2 ways to solve ur problem
1. Either get a NEW disc from microsoft or any computer shop for media center and then install it.
OR
2. Install XP home on your system and then try to put the CD for media center , it will update XP to media center . In this way u will get the media center back and u will also not lose any previous stored data.
NOTE: In both the above cases u will have to get the CD for Media center......
Wat matters is losing the data that is already stored on your system.
BUT AGAIN I WOULD LIKE TO REMIND HERE IS THAT INSTALLING XP HOME WILL NOT GET BACK U TO MEDIA CENTER AS THEY ARE DIFFERENT BUT IT MAKES NOT DIFFERENCE WHETHER IT IS XP HOME OR MEDIA CENTER AS ONLY DIFFERENCE IS ENTERTAINMENT>>> IN THE WORLD THERE ARE MORE PEOPLE USING XP HOME THAN MEDIA CENTER>>>

I would recommend to cont. with XP home

SOURCE: Installing XP on Toshiba Portege R500 Notebook

Guys, if you have the genuine XP CD, please download the Storage Driver from Intel and slipstream it into your version of XP CD. You can also slipstream Service Packs into it as well.
Personally I hate Vista so much. It really brings out the angry devil in me.
By the way, the best and easiest way to slipstream is to install and use nLite http://www.nliteos.com/
Let me know if you want help on installing XP on R500 (I build it a few days ago, but regret to update the BIOS to version 1.06 as I lost the Ctrl key on it).
To get to the BIOS, press and hold the Esc key then Power button.

Hi,

You cannot downgrade Windows 7 from Windows XP by not reformatting the hard drive. You need to Remove Windows 7 first, before installing Windows XP Operating System. In order to use the Windows XP CD to fully reformat the Hard drive, follow the steps on the link below.

Hi, you will need to reformat your hard drive before installing XP, First boot into BIOS by pressing the F1 key during bootup, change the primary boot drvice to CD rom, save changes. Insert XP cd into drive and reboot PC; select boot from CD when this appears during the initial boot fase. Allow files to be installed. When this finishes, delete partion and then repartion hard drive. Select format hard drive, when this completes your PC will reboot, do not select boot from CD and XP will start to install normally.
Hope this helps, if not come back to me.

Remove Hard Drive, connect it to a USB to Hard Drive "Dongle" & recover your files that way. When you connect your drive & dongle it will "Show Up" in My Computer as a "Drive" as such you can Copy, Cut & Paste between windows..Of course you would have to use a friends PC to do it as yours now is inoperative. When you have all what you want. Reformat the drive and put it back into your laptop and reinstall windows and apps.

Windows will not load in any mode!! Crashed after I shut it down to restart.

I imagine this is in a continuous loop back to the black screen asking how you want to start, safe mode, normal, etc....
A majority of the time this is due to a failed hard drive, but it could also be a corrupt operating system due to a virus. Start by doing a system repair with your recovery or operating system disc. If the repair doesn't take, the reformat the hard drive and install a new operating system. If the hard drive will not format or you have any problems during or after the install, then the hard drive has failed and will need replaced.
