Kitchen aid proline mixer MODEL: KSM5PSGR----When turned on....motor turns on...however, mixer will not always rotate in it's circularmotion...occassionally may need to push it so that it will rotate counter-clockwise. Also, when operating, it makes a "knocking" sound---like tappits within an engine.

If the motor is turning and the planetary is stationary then the 3 most likely causes in order of most likely are; 1) Broken fuse gear; 2) broken planetary pin; 3) broken fuse gear pin.
Put an ohmmeter across the two pins on the plug, on the mixer,,not the earth one.and turn the switch on.you should get a reading, plus it will change as you turn the switch to different settings.if no reading, suspect broken wire in plug,or mixer windings burnt out.try in a different socket
After many years dealing with Kitchen Aid mixers I purchased a pro 600 for my wife as an early Xmas gift. After just a few usages it started making a clunking noise in the gear housing. I removed the housing and discovered the casting is of very poor tolerances and the main drive assembly was lifting from the torque of the motor and causing the gear assembly to lift out of the casting and skipping on the worm gear. I am sure it is going to happen to many more of these units as the casting area that holds the bearing in is to large obviously an overdue mold in the casting process. Time for a recall Kitchen Aid.
you have lost the internal spring on the slide arm. a common problem but now the speed adjuster has been let go in the back of the motor. Best return to service centre as requires complete dismantle to repair, sorry.
