That you see how the thermostat works, let's look at what happens when the fridge is placed in an unheated space - like a garage. In winter time, the temperature can drop considerably below 38 degrees. If the outdoor temperature remains cold enough, for long enough - it will affect the thermostat in the fridge.

Many residential refrigerator / freezers are designed to work at temperature considerably above above freezing. Most modern refrigerator / freezer have a single electric thermostat - located in the fresh food compartment. This lone thermostat will control the compressor to keep the fridge (fresh food) section at the desired temperature (usually between 34 - 38 degrees F). The freezer will get colder regardless of how cold it is already whenever the fridge thermostat turns the compressor on.

Now that you see how the thermostat works, let's look at what happens when the fridge is placed in an unheated space - like a garage. In winter time, the temperature can drop considerably below 38 degrees. If the outdoor temperature remains cold enough, for long enough - it will affect the thermostat in the fridge. The temperature inside the fridge could drop below 38 degrees, preventing the thermostat from telling the compressor to turn on. Meanwhile, the temperature in the freezer compartment slowly rises from the normal -10 to 0 F degrees. It will continue to rise until it is the same temperature as the fresh food compartment or until the thermostat in the fresh food compartment tells the compressor to turn on again. This means the freezer contents will thaw.

If the temperature in the garage is even in the 40 to 50 degree range, the loss of cold in the fridge may not happen often enough to keep the compressor coming on often enough to keep some freezer items frozen solid - such as ice cream. Remember, water freezes at 32 degrees F, other products may require lower temperatures to remain frozen, and could thaw at 28 or other temperature.

Good luck!

Both fridge and freezer are turned up to maximum cooling but they just aren't cold enough even though the weather is mild. Icecream is very soft - barely frozen and fridge temp is about 8 degrees...

Sounds like a failure to defrost.
Look on the freezer rear wall inside the freezer for ice bukdup.
If there is ice the defrost components ,must be replaced.

Can it be put in a carport year round

Cold weather will not cause problem. The refrigerant stays at gaseous state well below freezing temperature. If i am not mistaken R134 boils at -27 degrees F. below that it would turn liquid but even then it still will not harm the system. Make sure there is no water in the line going to the ice maker and water dispenser because water can freeze and bust the water line.

Refrigerator/freezer in garage not freezing

Most refrigerator Manufactures have tested these machines in hot and cold weather and weather will effect operation and electricity consuption.
As far as cold weather goes It would run much better in cold weather than hot. As far as it being in the garage : It will wear on it faster. The humidity is not good on them and they get more dirt through the system and will need its normal mantenance more often. not to mention bugs and rodents like to find a warm place to hid with fee dinking water and a refrigerator provides that for them.

I have a HTR16ABSARWW Top Freezer Refrigerator in

You need to warm up the garage for it to work right. The cold control reads the refrigerator temperature and if it's already cold, will not turn on the compressor. Hence the freezer warms up to the ambient temperature.

Zanussi integrated fridge freezer, top half fridge not working

It appears you need to get the cold distributed from the freezer section to the frig section. This can only be accomplished by a fan that forces the cold air throught openings between both sections. Since the freezer in at the bottom, cold air cannot go upward, thereforethe fan. Chech that the interior fan (in the freezer section) is running. Check that the air openings between the sections are not blocked. Finally, if all looks good, then maybe the compressor system is slowly failing and only making enough cold for the freezer, but not enough to be circulated. Goodluck, Macgivor

Freezer won't work in garage in cold weather

Modern fridge/freezers are built to automatically defrost themselves. To do this they require that the room temperature is well above freezing to allow the defrost to take place. If you site the freezer in too cold an environment it is unable to defrost itself and will eventually stop working. It sounds strange but if it is too cold the freezer cannot work. The solution is to buy and fridge/freezer that does not automatically defrost itself if you want it to work in a cold environment.

Need a freezer for garage in the Dakotas

Refrigeration units don't care for the most part how cold it gets with exceptions. The oil is not a concern, neither is manual or auto defrost. Refrigeration units that are required to operate in cold temperatures, say below 30 degrees F. have crankcase heaters on them to heat the oil which keeps freon moving out of the oil and the bottom of the compressor. Otherwise when the compressor starts the cold freon will we sucked out of the bottom of the compress with a large quantity of oil which can destroy the compressor. Another item used for cold weather application is a fan control sensor which keeps the condensing temperature up or the unit will again remove the oil from the crankcase. It may work fine for a quite a while, but it will fail in continuously cold temperatures.

Frigidaire Freezer Runs Warm in Cold Weather

hi there the problem you have is that the temp in the garage is to low, the fridge part of your fridge freezer has priority and will only activate the compressor when req'd ie. in cold weather the fridge may not need to switch on the compressor for days at a time this is when the freezer will defrost.
All you can try doing is having some very low heating in your garage in the cold weather

hope this is of help.
